Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals have been considered promising materials for next-generation electronic devices due to their solution processability, bandgap tunability, and compatibility with low-temperature, large-area fabrication. Among these, cadmium selenide tetrapod nanocrystals have gained attention for their distinctive branched geometry, which facilitates efficient charge transport and improves mechanical durability in thin-film assemblies.
This dissertation investigates the engineering workflow from material-level characterization to device fabrication and ultimately to system-level integration. In the first phase, two material-focused studies were conducted using cadmium selenide tetrapods. The first involved refining a conventional cylindrical small-angle X-ray scattering model to better match the tetrapod geometry, resulting in improved agreement with experimental data. The second study explored how spatial dispersion of tetrapods in solution could be controlled by adjusting the polarity ratio of amphiphilic block copolymers and the solvent polarity.
In the second phase, the study focused on integrating tetrapod nanocrystals into thin-film transistors using planar electrode configurations and ion gel gating. By varying the arm lengths of the tetrapods, the study demonstrated improved field-effect mobility and enhanced mechanical robustness, attributed to the formation of extended conduction pathways and porous film morphology.
The final part of the research extends into system-level integration. A multi-functional electronic skin system was developed by vertically stacking quantum dot light-emitting diodes, perovskite-based photodetectors, and carbon nanotube-based pressure sensors. The resulting flexible platform demonstrated reliable operation under mechanical deformation, with capabilities for proximity sensing in the range of 1 to 50 mm and highly sensitive pressure detection. Although biosignal measurements such as photoplethysmography and electrocardiography were not implemented, the system design supports such functions, indicating its potential for future applications in healthcare robotics and wearable electronics.
In summary, this dissertation presents a comprehensive framework for linking semiconductor nanomaterial analysis to device development and system integration. It provides an engineering-based approach that bridges the gap between nanoscale material properties and practical applications, offering a technological foundation for future advancements in wearable healthcare devices, human–machine interfaces, and robotic sensing systems.
