Li ion batteries have emerged as critical energy storage systems, aligning with the global shift toward sustainable and eco-friendly technologies. A central yet often overlooked component in enhancing battery performance and sustainability is the role of anions, which significantly influence both manufacturing processes and electrolyte behavior. This dissertation investigates the comprehensive impacts of anions through two interconnected studies, addressing critical challenges in cathode production and low-temperature electrolyte performance.
The first part introduces an innovative aqueous cathode processing approach utilizing kosmotropic anions to effectively stabilize water molecules, significantly reducing undesirable side reactions with high nickel cathode materials such as LiNi0.8Co-0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811). Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations elucidate how the strong hydrogen bonding capability of kosmotropic anions reorganizes hydration structures, minimizing free water and enhancing the chemical stability of cathode interfaces. Experimentally, the resulting aqueous processed cathodes achieved comparable cycling performance to conventional methods while dramatically reducing material costs.
The second part of this dissertation focuses on designing electrolytes operable at ultra-low temperatures, emphasizing the crucial role of anions in electrolyte behavior and Li-ion desolvation kinetics. Unlike previous studies predominantly targeting solvent modifications, this work identifies that electrolyte anions significantly influence dendrite formation and overall battery performance at low temperatures. MD simulations combined with DFT analyses revealed contrasting trends in desolvation kinetics between bulk electrolytes and electrode surfaces, emphasizing the necessity of examining Li-ion interactions specifically at the anode interface under charging conditions. Experimental validation further supported these findings, demonstrating that electrolytes designed with carefully selected anions substantially improved low-temperature performance.
Overall, this dissertation provides comprehensive insights into the molecular level interactions governing anion behaviors in Li-ion battery cathode manufacturing and electrolyte design, offering practical strategies and methodological clarity for advancing sustainable, high performance energy storage solutions.
