Among various candidates for next-generation photovoltaics, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have gained significant attention, driven by their outstanding optoelectronic properties and compatibility with low-temperature solution processing. The combination of bandgap tunability and low exciton binding energy allows these materials to convert solar energy efficiently, even implemented as thin-films. Despite their rapid progress, the practical deployment of PSCs remains hindered by interfacial defects, which arise during fabrication and at the interfaces between functional layers. These defect states act as non-radiative recombination centers, promote the movement of mobile ions (I- and MA+), and obstruct efficient charge extraction at interfaces, ultimately hindering high-efficiency performance and accelerating long-term operational degradation. In response to these challenges, this dissertation presents a set of complementary strategies that target precise interfacial defect passivation through molecularly engineered layered structures, alongside electronic structure modulation of charge transport layers via doping, compositional grading, and oxidation-state control.
First, a ligand-engineered 2D Ruddlesden–Popper (RPP)/3D perovskite heterojunction strategy is presented to effectively suppress interfacial defects. By employing cis-configured cyclohexyl-based organic ligands bearing ammonium and hydroxyl functionalities, ultrathin 2D perovskite interlayers are constructed that form robust hydrogen and ionic coordination with the underlying 3D perovskite lattice. The spatial proximity and dual-site binding of the cis-isomer lead to enhanced interfacial crystallinity, effective passivation of undercoordinated Pb0 species, and significant suppression of trap-mediated non-radiative recombination. Devices incorporating this engineered interface exhibit enhanced photoluminescence, reduced trap-state density (Ntrap), and extended carrier lifetimes, which collectively translate into increased open-circuit voltage (VOC), enhanced fill factor (FF), and superior operational stability under ambient conditions.
Second, a graded nitrogen-doped TiO2 (TiO2:N) electron transport layer (ETL) is developed via pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of TiN under controlled oxygen partial pressures. This approach yields a graded TiO2:N structure exhibiting a continuous shift in the conduction band minimum (CBM), thereby facilitating cascade-like electron transport across the ETL. Surface electronic structure analyses confirm effective band offset engineering from nitrogen-rich to oxygen-rich regions, enabling directional electron extraction while suppressing interfacial recombination at the perovskite/ETL interface. This graded TiO2:N layers exhibit enhanced electrical conductivity and favorable energy alignment, achieving power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) up to 22.9% with suppressed hysteresis.
Lastly, precise modulation of the oxidation state and electronic structure of NiO-based hole transport layers (HTLs) via reactive gas control during PLD enables effective tuning of their morphological, optical, and electrical properties. Systematic adjustment of the O2/N2 ratio allows control over the Ni3+/Ni2+ ratio, nitrogen incorporation, and phase composition of NiO films. The optimized PLD-grown NiO films exhibit superior crystallinity, enhanced conductivity, and favorable energy level alignment with the perovskite valence band, while maintaining high optical transparency. Integration of these oxidation-state-engineered NiO HTLs into inverted PSCs yields enhanced current–voltage (J–V) characteristics and exceptional long-term operational stability, highlighting the promise of this scalable strategy for enabling next-generation high-performance perovskite photovoltaic architectures.
Together, these three strategies—molecularly directed interfacial passivation, nanoscale doping gradient for band alignment, and oxidation-state engineering of transport layers—collectively overcome key bottlenecks in PSC operation. By bridging materials chemistry with device-level architecture, this work elucidates fundamental structure-function relationships and establishes experimentally validated design principles that are broadly compatible with a wide range of perovskite formulations and structural configurations. The integrated framework presented in this dissertation provides a robust foundation for the scalable fabrication of high-efficiency, long-lifetime PSCs, thereby advancing their practical deployment in next-generation energy technologies.
