Robotic systems are increasingly deployed in unstructured environments, particularly where direct human access is undesirable and impractical due to safety risks, spatial constraints, or unsanitary and harsh working conditions. While autonomous robots are effective for repetitive and structured tasks in these settings, complex, unstructured, and highly variable tasks often require substantial machine learning resources and continuous technical intervention. In such cases, teleoperated robots tend to be more viable alternatives.
To enhance task efficiency and dexterity in teleoperation, reliable kinesthetic and cutaneous haptic feedback is essential, requiring the integration of high-performance sensors into the robot interface. However, such environments also pose significant challenges to robotic systems. In particular, conventional sensors are often vulnerable to thermal stress, humidity, radiation, and electromagnetic interference (EMI), thereby leading to unreliable sensing. Furthermore, the need for onboard electronics and complex wiring increases the difficulty of integration in confined spaces because these features contribute to overall system complexity. To address these limitations, this study proposes the application of fiber-optic sensing technology—specifically fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs)—which offers high sensitivity, long-range sensing, compact form factor, and robustness in harsh environments.
This thesis presents three fiber-optic sensing approaches. First, a sensing structure that can be easily embedded into confined spaces, such as in minimally invasive surgical devices or robotic hands with limited internal space, was developed. The structural design enhanced sensitivity, enabling the detection of minute external forces, and its practicality was validated through both uniaxial and multi-axial sensing applications. Second, a tendon-driven robotic hand was developed using a multifunctional fiber-optic tendon capable of both force transmission and tension sensing. This tendon reduced the number of required internal components, achieving a compact form factor. With the tension-sensing capability of the tendon, the robotic hand demonstrated its applicability in teleoperation through force feedback control. Third, the functionality of the robotic hand was extended to support tactile sensing through a multiplexed FBG sensor array, which was integrated into a real-time teleoperation system. This system was further combined with a commercial haptic interface to demonstrate both short- and long-distance (intercontinental) teleoperation with low-latency force and tactile feedback.
Experimental validation confirmed improvements in sensing resolution, feedback accuracy, and sensing robustness across all systems. This thesis empirically demonstrates that fiber-optic sensing technology can enhance the adaptability and reliability of robotic systems operating in unstructured environments such as nuclear facilities, minimally invasive surgery, and disaster response scenarios.
