PTFE(CA-PTFE)
    mA cm

As the demand for sustainable energy systems grows and awareness of environmental issues increases, fuel cells-high-efficiency, low-pollution energy conversion technologies are gaining significant attention. In particular, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and anion exchange membrane-based unitized regenerative fuel cells (AEM-URFCs) are being actively studied across various application fields, owing to their respective advantages. PEMFCs are employed in transportation, portable power sources, and stationary power generation, benefiting from their low operating temperature (50-100 °C), high power density, and rapid start-up characteristics. These fuel cells generate electricity by transferring protons (H+) through a polymer electrolyte membrane and facilitating the electrochemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen at the electrodes. Meanwhile, AEM-URFCs, which integrate electrolysis and fuel cell functions within a single device, offer improved energy storage and supply efficiency by combining hydrogen production and power generation. Utilizing anion exchange membranes to transfer hydroxide ions (OH-), AEM-URFCs provide economic benefits by enabling the use of low-cost, non-platinum catalysts. Nevertheless, technical challenges persist, including the chemical stability and ionic conductivity of the membranes and the need to ensure high bidirectional catalytic activity and electrode durability. In particular, the development of bifunctional catalysts capable of efficiently catalyzing both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial.
In this study, the reinforced composite membrane was fabricated by incorporating polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) with a lattice-ordered structure. Additionally, an oxygen electrode for AEM-URFCs was developed using a carbon nanotube (CNT) electrode featuring a similar lattice-ordered configuration. The fabricated materials were applied to both PEMFC and AEM-URFC systems to evaluate their performance. The developed composite membrane exhibited excellent mechanical strength and low gas permeability, contributing to enhanced fuel cell durability, while its thin structure allowed for the maintenance of high ionic conductivity. Furthermore, the lattice-ordered CNT electrode optimized the transfer pathways for electrons and ions, thereby improving the uniformity and efficiency of the electrode reactions. The membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) integrating the composite membrane and the CNT electrode demonstrated outstanding performance under the operating conditions of both PEMFC and AEM-URFC systems
The first chapter introduces the fundamental concepts of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) and Proton Exchange Membranes (PEMs), outlining their structure, operating principles, and key characteristics. Additionally, it offers a concise overview of Anion Exchange Membrane Regenerative Fuel Cells (AEM-URFCs), highlighting their potential advantages, differences from conventional PEMFCs, and emerging relevance in the field of sustainable energy systems.
In the second chapter, we present a rationally engineered reinforced composite membrane (RCM) designed to overcome the intrinsic incompatibility between hydrophilic sulfonate groups in perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) and the hydrophobic nature of nanoporous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) matrices. A novel fabrication approach utilizing electric-field guided electrospinning was developed to construct a cross-aligned PTFE (CA-PTFE) framework. This method enables the formation of a micron-scale, grid-type fibrous PTFE matrix through the annealing of electrospun conjugated polymers, followed by the removal of the carrier polymer and thermal fusion of PTFE particles. The resulting CA-PTFE matrix allows for uniform impregnation of PFSA, facilitating enhanced membrane hydration while suppressing excessive swelling and promoting efficient proton transport via concentrated sulfonate domains. Fuel cells employing CA-PTFE RCMs demonstrated exceptional performance across a wide humidity range, achieving a current density of 1.38 A cm-2 at 0.6 V and a peak power density of 0.85 W cm-2 under fully humidified conditions (RH 100%). These findings highlight the significance of structural control at the micro- and nanoscale, offering a promising route toward high-durability, high-performance polymer electrolyte membranes for next-generation fuel cell applications.
In the third chapter, anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolysis is considered a promising and cost-efficient approach for producing green hydrogen. Nevertheless, traditional AEMs encounter significant limitations, such as poor ionic conductivity, excessive swelling, and insufficient mechanical stability under high-pressure electrolysis, which contribute to performance decline and reduced operational lifespan. In this research, we present a highly durable reinforced composite membrane (RCM) incorporating polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) nanofibers (NFs), produced via emulsification electrospinning, to overcome these limitations. The PTFE NF network forms a porous yet mechanically strong reinforcement, facilitating effective ionomer infiltration and greatly improving the mechanical strength and dimensional stability of the PTFE/FAA composite membrane. This reinforcement effectively minimizes swelling-induced damage while maintaining efficient anion transport even at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, the embedded PTFE framework serves as a physical barrier at the electrode interface, reducing gas crossover and the risk of short-circuiting, thus improving overall cell safety. The PTFE/FAA composite membrane, with a thickness of about 50 μm, exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, reaching a high initial current density of 2.9 A cm-2 at 2.0 V and showing outstanding long-term durability, with stable operation sustained for over 1,000 h. These findings demonstrate the potential of NF-reinforced composite membranes to significantly improve both the performance and safety of AEM water electrolysis systems, paving the way for the commercialization of durable AEMs for sustainable hydrogen production
In the fourth chapter, Reinforced composite membranes (RCMs), comprising electrospun porous nanofibers (NFs) for mechanical support and perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) as the proton-conducting phase, have drawn significant interest for enhancing the durability of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Despite their potential, electrospinning encounters notable limitations in producing thin NF mats with adequate mechanical robustness, which is crucial for developing ultrathin RCMs aimed at reducing ohmic losses and improving power output. In this study, we introduce a thermomechanical stretching strategy to produce ultrathin polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) NF-based reinforcements. By stretching PTFE NFs by 2- and 3-fold, both the mat thickness was decreased and the internal porosity was significantly increased (up to 77.9%), thereby enabling effective infiltration of the PFSA ionomer. Importantly, the 3-fold stretched PTFE-based RCM (3-sPTFE RCM), with a thickness below 20 μm, demonstrated minimal swelling in humidified conditions and exhibited superior proton conductivity compared to other RCM variants and even commercial Nafion XL. Cells utilizing the 3-sPTFE RCM showed excellent performance across a wide range of relative humidity (RH), reaching a current density of 2.79 A cm-2 at 0.6 V and a peak power density of 1.99 W cm-2 under 100% RH. Additionally, the 3-sPTFE RCM maintained outstanding durability, recording a low hydrogen crossover current (< 3 mA cm-2 at 0.4 V) even after 21,000 wet/dry cycles - surpassing the DOE’s durability benchmarks for automotive membranes. This novel fabrication approach for ultrathin PTFE NF reinforcements presents a compelling route toward developing next-generation high-performance and long-lasting PEM fuel cells.
In the fifth chapter, this study explores a range of membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) parameters at the oxygen and hydrogen electrodes to optimize the performance of high-efficiency anion-exchange membrane unitized regenerative fuel cells (AEM-URFCs). Key variables such as ionomer content, catalyst loading, gas diffusion layer (GDL) types, and catalyst selections for both electrodes were systematically investigated to enhance AEM-URFC efficiency. The analysis of GDLs revealed that those tailored for fuel cell (FC) applications resulted in superior round-trip efficiency (RTE). The performance impact of different hydrogen electrode catalysts (Pt/C and PtRu/C) was also evaluated. Furthermore, variations in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst types (Pt/C vs. Pt black) and adjustments to ORR and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst loadings were examined. As a result of these optimizations, we achieved a high-efficiency AEM-URFC with an RTE of 65.9% at 20 mA cm⁻², corresponding to 0.871 V in FC mode and 1.572 V in water electrolysis (WE) mode. Notably, the performance of this AEM-URFC exceeds that of previously reported systems, primarily due to the reduced ohmic losses attributed to the high electrical conductivity and hydrophobic nature of the carbon-based porous transport layer (PTL). Additionally, the device demonstrated operational durability over 10 full charge/discharge cycles, confirming its cyclability under URFC conditions.
Lastly, the sixth chapter introduce a novel oxygen electrode design tailored to enhance the round-trip efficiency (RTE) and operational current density of anion-exchange membrane unitized regenerative fuel cells (AEM-URFCs). This electrode features a dual-layer (DL) configuration, consisting of a dedicated oxygen evolution reaction (OER) outer layer and an oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) inner layer, thereby improving catalytic specificity and utilization. The outer OER layer adopts a macroporous structure, where electrocatalyst nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed onto carbon nanotube (CNT) scaffolds forming a square-pore network, effectively promoting mass transport and reaction kinetics. This structural innovation resulted in a marked improvement in performance, with the DL oxygen electrode achieving a record-high RTE of 59.2% at 20 mA cm-2, and sustaining an ultra-high operating current density of 400 mA cm-2, -surpassing the performance of conventional electrodes (RTE of 55.4%). The combination of hierarchical porosity and functionally separated catalyst layers offers a significant advancement in the design of reversible electrodes for AEM-URFC systems, representing the highest reported RTE to date in the field.
This dissertation explores structural strategies to enhance performance in electrochemical hydrogen systems through advanced membrane and electrode design. A cross-aligned PTFE framework with a grid-like structure was developed to reinforce PFSA-based membranes, enabling high proton conductivity, minimal swelling, and excellent fuel cell performance under varying humidity. For oxygen electrodes, a dual-layer structure incorporating a macroporous outer layer was designed using carbon nanotube (CNT) scaffolds with square-pore architecture. This CNT-based layer improved oxygen evolution kinetics and catalytic utilization, significantly increasing round-trip efficiency in AEM-URFCs. Together, these innovations demonstrate the critical role of structural engineering in advancing durable and high-performance electrochemical devices.
