G.Fauré와 R.Strauss의 예술가곡에 대한 고찰: 성악적 해석과 표현을 중심으로 = Analysis study of Analytical Study of the Art Songs of G. Fauré and R. Strauss: With an Emphasis on Musical Expression

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 필자의 석사과정 졸업연주 프로그램 중 가브리엘 포레(Gabriel Fauré, 1845–1924)의 프랑스 멜로디(Mélodie)인 <Automne>, <Les berceaux>, <Fleur jetée>와 리하르트 슈트라우스(Richard Strauss, 1864–1949)의 독일 리트(Lied)인 <Breit’über mein Haupt>, <Ruhe, meine Seele>, <Du meines Herzens Krönelein>, and <Kling !>을 중심으로 작품의 음악적 특성과 시적 해석, 그리고 연주자 관점에서의 표현을 심층적으로 분석하고 고찰하였다. 두 작곡가는 19세기 후반부터 20세기 초에 이르기까지 활발히 활동하며, 프랑스의 예술가곡 ‘멜로디’와 독일의 예술가곡 ‘리트’의전통을 대표적으로 이끌었다. 이들은 낭만주의 후기의 정서적 깊이와 서정성을 바탕으로 하면서도, 근대음악으로의 이행기에 나타나는 다양한 음악적 변화와 실험적 어법을 작품 속에 반영함으로써, 예술가곡 장르의 표현 가능성을 한층 확장 시켰다.
포레의 가곡은 프랑스 시문학의 섬세한 정서를 정교하게 음악화한 작품들로, 내면적 고백과 정서의 흐름이 부드럽게 드러나며, 독창적인 화성 진행과 우아한 선율을 통해 프랑스 멜로디의 핵심적인 미학을 구현한다. 반면, 리하르트 슈트라우스의 가곡은 독일 시문학의 상징성과 철학적 깊이를 바탕으로, 극적인 구성과 복잡한 화성, 풍부한 음향적 색채를 통해 오페라적인 감정선과 교향악적 구조를 가곡 양식 속에 담아낸다는 부분에서 독일 리트의 후기 낭만주의적 정점을 보여준다.
본 연구에서는 두 작곡가의 시대적 배경과 작품 성향을 고찰하고, 각 곡의 시인과 문학적 배경을 분석한 후, 시와 음악의 유기적 관계를 바탕으로 조성, 선율, 화성, 리듬, 다이내믹 등의 음악적 요소를 세부적으로 분석하였다. 특히 작품 해석의 관점에서는 연주자가 가사와 음악을 어떻게 결합하여 감정의 흐름을 설득력 있게 표현할 수 있을지를 중심으로 고찰하였다.
이를 통해 각 작곡가의 음악이 시대와 문학에 어떻게 반영하며, 그 안에서 성악적 해석과 표현이 어떤 방식으로 구현되어야 하는지를 탐색하였고, 깊이 있고 통합적인 해석에 도움이 될 수 있는 연주 방안을 제시하고자 하였다.

This thesis presents an in-depth analysis and interpretation of selected works from the author’s master’s degree graduation recital program, focusing on Gabriel Fauré’s (1845–1924) French mélodies <Automne>, <Les berceaux>, and <Fleur jetée> and Richard Strauss’s (1864–1949) German Lieder <Breit’über mein Haupt>, <Ruhe, meine Seele>, <Du meines Herzens Krönelein>, and <Kling!>. Active from the late 19th to the early 20th century, these two composers played a leading role in shaping the traditions of the French mélodie and the German Lied. Their works, deeply rooted in the emotional and lyrical qualities of late Romanticism, also incorporate musical innovations and experimental approaches that reflect the transitional aesthetics of early modernism, thereby expanding the expressive scope of the art song genre.
Fauré’s mélodies translate the subtle emotional nuances of French poetry into refined musical expressions, characterized by introspective lyricism, flowing emotional contours, and elegant melodic lines supported by unique harmonic progressions embodying the core aesthetics of the French mélodie. In contrast, Strauss’s Lieder are grounded in the symbolic and philosophical depth of German poetry, and are distinguished by their dramatic structure, complex harmonies, and rich orchestral colors. These elements combine to create operatic emotional trajectories and symphonic structures within the Lied form, representing the height of late Romantic German song.
This study explores the historical and stylistic contexts of both composers, and analyzes the literary backgrounds of the poems set to music. It examines the organic relationship between text and music through detailed analysis of musical elements such as tonality, melody, harmony, rhythm, and dynamics. Special emphasis is placed on interpretative approaches from the performer’s perspective, focusing on how singers can effectively integrate text and music to convey emotional flow with conviction.
Through this investigation, the thesis aims to reveal how each composer’s musical language reflects their literary and cultural environment, and how vocal interpretation and expression should be approached. Ultimately, it seeks to provide practical and insightful interpretive strategies to support a deeper, more holistic understanding of the performance of art songs.
