This dissertation presents a comprehensive investigation into the time-dependent rheological behavior of lithium-ion battery anode slurries through integrated experimental characterization and numerical analysis. The aim is to establish a unified framework for understanding and predicting unsteady flow behavior under process-relevant conditions.
Lithium-ion battery electrode manufacturing involves a sequence of operations, including mixing, storage, transport, and coating, each associated with distinct shear rate regimes and time scales. Under these conditions, the slurry, a highly concentrated multiphase suspension, exhibits complex non-Newtonian behaviors such as yield stress, viscoelasticity, thixotropy, and shear-thinning. These behaviors originate from multi-scale microstructural interactions, including percolated carbon black networks and polymer-particle interactions. Steady-state rheological models fail to capture the time-dependence and flow-history effects arising in such environments, necessitating the development of a more predictive, transient rheological framework.
The experimental component investigates the transient response of the slurry using flow start-up and cessation tests and shear rate step tests. The results reveal that short-term behavior is dominated by viscoelastic effects, while long-term dynamics are governed by structural evolution processes. Based on the interplay between shear rate and time scales, a rheological regime map is constructed to classify dominant behaviors across different flow conditions. This map provides practical criteria for selecting constitutive models and optimizing operating conditions in battery electrode processing.
The numerical study focuses on pulsatile flows of shear-thinning fluids, which commonly arise from flow disturbances such as pump-induced oscillations or mechanical vibrations. Using the Carreau model to describe shear-thinning viscosity, numerical analyses are conducted over a range of material properties and pulsation frequencies. A characteristic viscosity derived from steady-state conditions is used to define a non-Newtonian Womersley number that quantifies the relative importance of viscous and inertial effects. The computed flow responses are organized into master curves describing amplitude and phase lag, enabling efficient prediction of pulsatile flow behavior without the need for full transient computations.
The integrated experimental and numerical investigations establish a comprehensive methodology for analyzing time-dependent rheology in lithium-ion battery slurries. The resulting framework provides both scientific insight into transient non-Newtonian flow behavior and practical tools for process modeling, analysis, and control. The methodology is extensible to a wide range of highly concentrated multiphase suspensions, demonstrating broad applicability in energy and process engineering systems.
