In urban environments, basements are widely utilized to maximize spatial efficiency in buildings. Building basements are directly exposed to seismic ground motions during earthquakes, making their seismic design critical for ensuring the structural integrity of the entire building and minimizing damage. Unlike simple structures such as retaining walls or piles, buildings are experienced complex dynamic interactions between the superstructure and the basement. These soil–basement–superstructure interactions can significantly increase base shear forces and overturning moments during seismic events, as well as amplify relative displacement between the wall and surrounding soil, thereby altering the magnitude and distribution of dynamic earth pressures. Nevertheless, conventional dynamic earth pressure estimation methods do not adequately account for soil–structure interaction (SSI) effects, and often overlook key factors such as the phase difference between soil and structure.
In liquefied ground conditions, the reduction in soil stiffness and strength further intensifies SSI effects. During liquefaction, interaction between the structure and surrounding soil causes stress redistribution patterns that differ significantly from free-field responses. Excessive deformation in the liquefied soil tends to increase both settlement and rotation of buildings. These observations underscore the necessity of considering SSI in seismic design under liquefiable conditions. Despite the growing importance of this issue, most previous studies have focused on quay walls or pile foundations, and the combined effects of liquefaction on dynamic earth pressure acting on basement walls have not been thoroughly investigated.
To address this research gap, this study conducted a series of 1g shaking table model tests to evaluate the behavior of dynamic earth pressure on basement walls, considering SSI effects. A residential building prototype with three basement levels was modeled in three height configurations: 0-story, 3-story, and 9-story above ground. Two basement fixity conditions were tested: an embedded basement simulating a shallow foundation on soil, and a fixed basement anchored to a rigid base. Experiments were performed under two ground conditions—dense dry sand and loose saturated sand. A 10 Hz sinusoidal base motion was applied to the model container. In dry soil conditions, three increasing input amplitudes (0.15g, 0.20g, and 0.30g) were used, while in saturated conditions, a constant amplitude of 0.15g was applied for 10 seconds. The experimental setup enabled a comprehensive investigation of SSI and liquefaction effects on seismic earth pressure behavior in building basements.
Based on the results from the dry ground tests, the dynamic earth pressure behavior on basement walls varied significantly with basement fixity and building height. Low-rise buildings exhibited sliding or tilting as the basement and superstructure moved with the ground, while high-rise buildings showed rotational or opposite-direction tilting depending on fixity. The earth pressure fluctuated with relative displacement between soil and basement, and its distribution changed from triangular to inverted triangular with increasing height. Dynamic thrust increased with building height and was greater in fixed basements due to larger relative displacement. In low-rise embedded cases, dynamic thrust acted as a resisting force, while in high-rise or fixed conditions, it acted as a driving force.
In the saturated ground tests, excess pore pressure behavior differed between the basement wall vicinity and the free field. Liquefaction occurred in the free field but was suppressed near the basement wall, where excess pore pressure was about 40% lower due to soil–structure interaction. The dynamic resultant thrust was dominated by the seismic water force, particularly its non-fluctuating component, which followed the excess pore pressure trend. An analytical formula considering the excess pore pressure ratio and kinematic interaction was proposed. Comparison with experimental results showed that inertial effects were minimal in fixed basements but led to underestimation in high-rise embedded cases due to increased relative displacement.
