In mechanoluminescence stress sensors, understanding the relationship between light emission and sensor microstructure is crucial to ensure the accuracy, sensitivity, and reliability of stress sensing throughout operation. An irreversible deformation, minor-cracks and separation at the particle-epoxy interface would reduce stress transfer efficiency from matrix to ML particles, which would negatively affect mechanoluminescence. To re-use deteriorated sensors suffering from such damage and maintain the same ML performance, the polymer matrix should possess the capability to repair structural flaws.
Self-healing epoxy vitrimers can open up new opportunities for recovering mechanoluminescence, offering durable and environmentally friendly high-performance stress sensors. This study examines two epoxy vitrimer systems: disulfide and siloxane bond exchange networks to be used in ML stress sensors. First, disulfide bond exchange vitrimers, VT, are investigated to achieve the most optimal condition for self-healing and mechanical strength. Two resin systems, aromatic and aliphatic blends, are employed along with carbon nanotubes, which enables tailoring the stiffness, ductility and self-healing efficiency in synthesized epoxy vitrimers. Then, SAOED particles are implemented in disulfide bond exchange vitrimers for the synthesis of self-healing ML stress sensors. However, the opacity of disulfide vitrimers restrained their use in ML stress sensors. Then, another type of epoxy vitrimer with siloxane bond exchange mechanisms is chosen to replace disulfide bond exchange vitrimers. It is revealed that the transparency of vitrimers with dynamic siloxanes, SVT, is comparable to commercial epoxy. Considering their ideal thermal, mechanical and luminescence properties, SVT networks are found to be promising to replace commercial epoxies in stress sensors. The dynamic bond exchange mechanism also suggests recovery of internal damage and luminescence, providing sustainability. To boost the recovery of light emission further, SAOED particles are functionalized with a silane coupling agent, which improves particle-epoxy interface and facilitates the direct integration of bond exchange reactions at the particle surface. A direct relation between luminescence and interfacial adhesion, including the separation of SAOED particles from polymer matrix and their repair, has been established using advanced characterization techniques.
Exposing sensors to a thermal treatment revealed an increase in light intensity, which is associated both with a thermal excitation on SAOED particles and self-healing bond exchange in dynamic epoxy networks. To clarify the prominent mechanism in luminescence recovery, control examples are performed comparatively. As a result, it is concluded that ML stress sensors with dynamic covalent bonds allow an easier conformational change and repair of weakened interface, which leads to a higher ML recovery. Moreover, leveraging surface functional ML particles offers not only an improved interface but also bond exchange reactions to take place near to particle surface. The combination of these two mechanisms enhances the luminescence recovery, even after repetitive loadings and preserves the recovered light emission for extended periods.
