Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and the adoption of alternative marine fuels such as ammonia are increasingly recognized as essential pathways to decarbonize offshore and maritime sectors. This dissertation presents a series of experimental and modeling studies that address key technical challenges in CO₂ transport infrastructure and ammonia-fueled ship systems, aiming to improve operational safety, efficiency, and scalability.
First, the study addresses two-phase flow-induced vibrations (FIVs) in CO₂ transport pipelines, which are particularly critical when reusing offshore infrastructure. Lab-scale experiments using a vertical riser flow loop captured vibration and pressure fluctuation data under unstable flow conditions. These data were used to develop an artificial neural network (ANN) model for early detection of two-phase unstable flow (USF), which triggers control actions using internal model control (IMC). The control system was validated through OLGA simulations of a CO₂ injection pipeline in the East Sea of South Korea, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing pressure surges and instability duration, thus improving pipeline reliability.
Second, the study investigates the thermodynamic behavior and handling characteristics of liquefied CO₂ (LCO₂) mixtures under cryogenic storage conditions. Vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) measurements were conducted for binary and ternary mixtures containing impurities such as N₂, H₂, CH₄, and Ar at −30 °C and −50 °C. Vapor phase compositions were measured to validate commercial thermodynamic models. Additional experiments examined pressure and temperature instability during LCO₂ transfer between pressurized cells, focusing on the influence of impurity content and flow conditions. These findings provide insight into phase behavior and operational reliability of LCO₂ cargo systems.
Third, the dissertation presents a dynamic simulation and mitigation study for ammonia release during nitrogen purging in ammonia fuel supply systems. Aspen HYSYS was used to simulate transient flow characteristics under varying purging conditions. Based on these results, a temperature swing adsorption (TSA) system utilizing zeolite 13X impregnated with 0.5 wt% MgCl₂ was modeled and evaluated using Aspen Adsorption. The model was validated using experimental isotherms and breakthrough data. Its performance was then compared with water scrubbers and incinerators in terms of energy consumption and equipment size. The TSA system demonstrated a compact design, ammonia recovery potential, and regulatory compliance, with a reasonable level of energy demand. These results confirm its feasibility as a sustainable solution for ammonia release mitigation.
Collectively, this work provides practical insights into key aspects of future maritime energy transport systems. It contributes experimental datasets, control strategies, and modeling frameworks that support safe, effective, and scalable offshore operations. The findings offer guidance for the development of CO₂ transport systems and the integration of zero-carbon fuels such as ammonia, accelerating the transition toward scalable and operationally reliable carbon-neutral energy transport systems.
