This dissertation presents the development of a GPU-based Monte Carlo (MC) neutron transport system tailored for the high-fidelity analysis of advanced reactor systems. These reactors often feature geometrically complex cores and exhibit strong multiphysics feedback, posing significant challenges for conventional simulation tools. To overcome these limitations, this research introduces three significant advancements: a GPU-based neutron tracking module for unstructured meshes, an extensible multiphysics coupling framework, and a GPU-based time-dependent Monte Carlo (TDMC) simulation capability.
The first development is a neutron tracking module designed to efficiently support unstructured mesh geometries. By integrating graphics ray tracing technology and introducing the Proper-Hit algorithm, the system ensures robust and accurate ray traversal across complex geometries. A zone-wise delta-tracking method was also implemented to improve overall tracking efficiency in unstructured meshes. A flexible multi-mesh tally scheme was also implemented, allowing decoupling between transport and tally meshes, and enabling compatibility with multiphysics codes.
The second contribution is the construction of a multiphysics simulation framework based on MPI dynamic process management. This framework enables modular coupling between the MC neutron transport code and external thermal-hydraulic or structural solvers. It supports bidirectional data exchange across non-conforming meshes and facilitates fully coupled simulations. The framework was applied to the analysis of heat pipe–cooled microreactors (HPMRs), and its accuracy was validated through the KRUSTY experiment and full core simulations of the MegaPower reactor.
The third advancement is a GPU-based TDMC method that enables direct simulation of transient phenomena. A time bin-by-bin particle tracking scheme with GPU-parallelized population control and delayed neutron treatment was implemented to ensure statistical stability and scalability. The method was verified against standard benchmarks and applied to transient scenarios involving control rod and control drum movements of practical reactor problems.
Collectively, the proposed system provides a scalable, high-fidelity simulation environment for advanced reactors, overcoming long-standing limitations in geometry representation, solver coupling, and time-dependent MC simulations.
