Implantable bioelectronic devices have emerged as a promising platform for next–generation medical diagnostics and therapies by enabling real–time acquisition of physiological signals through direct contact on target tissues or organs. Despite their clinical potential, conventional implantable devices inevitably require surgical extraction after use, which can lead to needs of secondary operation accompanying tissue damage, increased risk of infection, and economic burdens for patients. To address these limitations, the new concept of implantable electronics, called transient electronics—devices that naturally degrade into molecules in vivo after performing their function—has garnered increasing attention. Transient electronics are designed to operate over a defined functional period and then undergo controlled biodegradation, eliminating the need for surgical retrieval. Biodegradable electronics have witnessed significant progress in recent years, enabling the development of resorbable systems such as physiological sensors, wireless neural stimulators, and drug delivery modules that combine precise functionality with biocompatible degradation. A diverse range of materials—spanning bioresorbable metals, semiconductor compounds, and soft polymer encapsulants—has been developed to optimize device performance under physiological conditions. There is increasing emphasis on enhancing the electrical performance, biocompatibility, and mechanical compliance of materials to accommodate the dynamic and delicate nature of biological tissues. In this context, future advances in transient electronics are anticipated to focus on the development of integrated, multifunctional systems capable of real–time diagnostics, localized therapy, and autonomous bioresorption—representing a significant step toward personalized and minimally invasive medical technologies.
Such systems rely on a carefully engineered combination of biodegradable inorganic and organic materials, wherein the inorganic components provide electrical functionality, while the organic constituents serve as substrates and encapsulants to ensure mechanical stability and biocompatibility. For successful operation within biological environments, biodegradable thin–film materials must not only deliver reliable electrical performance and predictable transience but also exhibit high mechanical softness and minimal mismatch with surrounding tissues. To address these requirements, a variety of biodegradable metals—such as Mg (Mg), molybdenum (Mo), zinc (Zn), tungsten (W), and iron (Fe)—have been explored as conductive elements. Likewise, semiconducting materials including Si (Si) and zinc oxide (ZnO) have been investigated for their potential in transient sensing and circuit applications. Despite these advances, key challenges remain. Rapid degradation rates, susceptibility to localized galvanic corrosion, and limited mechanical compliance continue to hinder device stability and long–term functionality in vivo.
In the first part, a materials–based strategy was introduced to enhance the corrosion resistance of Mg—a metal known for its high electrical conductivity and excellent biocompatibility, yet prone to rapid in vivo degradation. To address this limitation, a homogeneous Mg–Zn alloy thin film was synthesized via radio–frequency (RF) sputtering, aiming to eliminate the phase separation typically observed in conventionally cast alloys. This approach yielded a single–phase microstructure, which significantly improved both electrochemical stability and mechanical integrity, as verified through systematic corrosion and nano–tensile testing. Leveraging these properties, a wireless thin–film heater was successfully fabricated using the Mg–Zn alloy electrode, demonstrating its feasibility as a bioresorbable thermotherapeutic device for implantable applications.
In the second part, Mg silicide (Mg2Si), a biodegradable semiconductor, was investigated to enable low–power electronic applications that are difficult to realize with conventional Si–based transient devices due to their relatively wide bandgap. Mg2Si thin films, possessing a narrow bandgap of approximately 0.6 to 0.88 eV, were successfully synthesized and systematically characterized. The films exhibited both favorable biodegradability and intrinsic semiconducting properties. When integrated into low–temperature thermoelectric generators and thin–film transistors, the devices operated at reduced voltages and demonstrated high carrier mobilities, thereby highlighting the potential of Mg2Si for next–generation bioresorbable and energy–efficient electronic systems.
These studies establish a unified framework for engineering high–performance transient electronic devices by leveraging bioresorbable material platforms and scalable thin–film fabrication processes, thereby advancing their applicability in next–generation implantable medical technologies.
