Lead halide perovskites (LHPs) have recently attracted significant attention as next-generation light-emitting materials owing to their unique advantages, including a narrow full-width at half maximum (FWHM < 20 nm), solution processibility, low material cost, excellent charge transport properties. However, the bulk crystal of LHPs has a limitation in that the exciton binding energy is inherently low so that excitons can be easily dissociated at room temperature due to thermal energy. One promising approach to address this issue is using colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs), which are synthesized in solution with the assistance of ligands, allowing precise control over crystal size—typically around 10 nm. PeNCs generally exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), not only due to the spatial confinement effect associated with their small size but also because of the effective surface passivation of ionic defects by surface-binding ligands. Even with such attractive properties, improving the electroluminescence of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on PeNCs has been limited due to the inherent dynamic nature of the perovskite lattice and ligands. This thesis delves into strategies to suppress the inherent dynamic nature of colloidal PeNCs, particularly focusing on a materials-based approach. Additionally, we propose a pathway to dramatically improve the outcoupling efficiency of PeNC-LEDs, potentially guiding future development efforts in this field.
In Chapter 2, a novel strategy was developed to strengthen the perovskite lattice by utilizing π-conjugated molecular multipods (CMMs) featuring large surface area and multiple discrete surface-binding sites. CMMs preferentially align horizontally on the perovskite surface, maximizing non-covalent interactions (van der Waals interaction and multiple hydrogen bonds with organic cations) with the perovskite surface. These interactions suppress inherent low-frequency vibrations of soft ionic lattice in the perovskite, thereby reducing the dynamic disorder present in perovskite materials. We demonstrate that strengthening the perovskite lattice effectively enhances the luminescence efficiency. Furthermore, by using PeNCs doped with guanidinium (GA) cation, the efficiency of PeNC-LEDs with a lattice-strengthening CMM was maximized, achieving an EQE of 26.1%.
In Chapter 3, we present a rational molecular design strategy that suppresses the detachment of dynamically-binding ligands, thereby enabling the realization of high-efficiency PeNC-LEDs. Ligands in colloidal PeNCs tend to detach easily from the perovskite surface due to their highly dynamic nature, which typically results in a lower PLQY in the film state than in the solution state. Although CMMs exert a beneficial effect by strengthening the perovskite lattice, we found that its functional moiety can also form hydrogen bonds with surface ligands, thereby facilitating their detachment and ultimately compromising the emission efficiency. It was confirmed that CMMs forming stronger hydrogen bonding with ligands induce severe ligand detachment, which is accompanied by the formation of metallic lead. We elucidate that the hydrogen bond energy between CMMs and the ligand is governed not only by the functional groups on CMMs, but also by the steric hindrance imposed by its molecular structure.
In Chapter 4, we proposed a materials-based strategy to overcome the limitations of optical efficiency in PeNC-LEDs. By reducing the dimensionality of PeNCs from nanocubes to nanoplatelets (NPLs), we modulate the fraction of horizontally oriented transition dipole moment (TDM) of PeNCs. Additionally, a thermal treatment was performed to induce the growth of nanorods into perovskite nanoplatelets (PeNPLs), further increasing the ratio of horizontal emitting dipole. Horizontal emitting dipole ratio of PeNPL films was measured using angle-dependent photoluminescence measurements. Optical simulations reveal that our approach could enhance the outcoupling efficiency of PeNC-LEDs to over 40%. The calculated horizontal TDM ratio was further supported by Fourier image microscopy (FIM). To develop high-performance PeNPL-LEDs, a ligand exchange method was developed to achieve better surface passivation and improved charge transport properties of PeNPLs, enabling to achieve EQE of 3.36% in PeNPL-LEDs.
