Global warming, driven by the accumulation of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel combustion, poses an existential threat, necessitating a transition to cleaner energy sources. Hydrogen is a promising carbon free fuel, but its adoption in gas turbines faces challenges including elevated NOx emissions, flashback, and altered combustion instability characteristics. This study investigates these critical issues in partially premixed hydrogen flames using single and dual nozzle combustor configurations to provide fundamental insights and suggest solutions.
First, the flashback process in a swirl-stabilized combustor designed with a short mixing length was investigated. The process was found to occur in two distinct stages: an initial transition from a V-shaped to an M-shaped flame, driven by the upstream movement of the inner recirculation zone (IRZ) due to changes in fuel distribution, followed by the flashback where the flame transitions to a Narrow-M (N-M) structure. This final step is governed by the balance between local flame speed and flow velocity, which leads to the separation and eventual disappearance of the.
Second, the thermo-acoustic combustion instability characteristics of single- and dual-nozzle configurations were compared to understand the effects of flame-to-flame interaction. While both setups exhibited longitudinal instability modes, the dual-nozzle configuration effectively suppressed high-frequency instability at longer combustor lengths. This out-of-phase region is attributed to the flame interaction, which induces a longitudinal phase delay in heat release perturbations and attenuate the instability.
Finally, to address the challenge of NOx emissions in a Micro-mixer (MMX) type nozzle, a tangential fuel injection method was employed to generate a fuel-induced swirl. This strategy successfully separated the flame into distinct Integrated, Lifted-Quadruple, and Attached-Quadruple Flame (AQF) structures. The investigation revealed that this swirl-induced flame separation leads to a linear decrease in NOx emissions by shortening the residence time of combustion gases in the high-temperature reaction zone. The AQF configuration was identified as the most promising, exhibiting both the lowest NOx emissions and the widest operational stability range.
These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the key challenges in hydrogen combustion and offer fundamental data that can contribute to the design of more stable and environmentally friendly hydrogen-fueled gas turbines.
