LSST(Legacy Survey of Space and Time)

Asteroids are both a treasure and a threat since they preserve clues to the early Solar System while posing potential hazards to Earth. Numerous studies, including several space missions, have advanced our understanding of asteroid surfaces. However, due to limited observational data, their internal structures remain largely unknown. In this study, we propose new techniques to infer asteroid interiors using surface characteristics, and we validate these methods using the case of the near-Earth asteroid (25143) Itokawa, whose surface processes and rubble-pile structure were previously investigated by the Hayabusa mission.

In Chapter 2, we present a method for estimating the timescale of space weathering on Itokawa. Space weathering refers to the surface alteration of airless bodies by solar wind particles and micrometeoroid impacts. Its timescale remains debated, ranging from $10^2$ to $10^7$ years depending on the methodology. Our new approach uses the size-frequency distribution of bright mottles observed on Itokawa’s surface. This technique offers advantages over previous methods by being based on direct asteroid observations and being less influenced by granular convection. Our analysis suggests a rapid space weathering timescale of approximately $10^3$ years, supporting solar wind as the dominant mechanism. We also propose that the formation of the 8-meter Kamoi crater exposed fresh materials on the surface.

To test this hypothesis, Chapter 3 presents numerical simulations of seismic energy propagation and subsequent landslides triggered by the impact. Unlike previous studies that approximated the asteroid as a cylinder, our simulation employs a realistic 3D shape model of Itokawa. We find that the Kamoi impact could generate accelerations exceeding surface gravity across the entire body, explaining the distribution of fresh terrains identified in Hayabusa images. Our results also constrain Itokawa’s interior to a rubble-pile structure composed of 30–60 meter-sized boulders. Furthermore, we identify a correlation between seismic diffusivity and surface space weathering, suggesting a method to infer the interior structure of other asteroids by comparing their weathering degree to that of Itokawa.

The techniques developed in this study are applicable to other S-type asteroids, including targets of past and ongoing missions such as Dimorphos (impacted by DART), and future Korean asteroid missions currently in preparation. Our seismic shaking model can also be scaled to various asteroid sizes, enabling interpretation of the ratio of unweathered Q-type to weathered S-type asteroids from large survey missions like LSST and SPHEREx. Finally, the correlation between seismic diffusivity and weathering degree offers a rapid diagnostic tool for probing asteroid interiors from surface spectra, critical for planetary defense strategies against potentially hazardous asteroids.
