With the increasing demand for renewable energy to achieve future sustainable development goals, offshore wind farms (OWFs) have emerged as a critical alternative energy source. However, alongside this expansion, concerns regarding underwater noise pollution generated during OWF construction and operation have grown, owing to its potential to disrupt marine ecosystems. While numerous studies have investigated these effects in Europe and North America, research targeting local marine species in East Asia remains scarce, emphasizing the urgent need for region-specific assessments. The present study aimed to assess biological responses to OWF-related noise through 1) identification of behavioral changes and response thresholds in fishes subjected to pile driving noise, and 2) evaluation of physiological responses in fishes exposed to construction (pile driving) and operational (turbine operation) noise. To achieve these aims, controlled laboratory experiments were conducted to measure changes in behavioral and physiological parameters. In addition, a literature review was conducted to synthesize current knowledge on the effects of underwater noise on fishes and invertebrates, placing the experimental findings in a broader ecological context.
To address the first objective, the effects of pile driving noise generated during OWF construction were evaluated on the behavior of three juvenile marine fishes (Lateolabrax japonicus, Acanthopagrus schlegelii, and Platichthys stellatus) that are commonly found and cultured in East Asian seas. Playback experiments using pile driving noise at 138 dB re 1 μPa (zero-to-peak) demonstrated rapid behavioral alterations. L. japonicus and A. schlegelii exhibited significant reductions in swimming speed and group cohesion, with approximately 40% of individuals remaining un-habituated even after five minutes. Particularly, L. japonicus displayed clear horizontal avoidance of the noise source, a behavior that persisted beyond the termination of noise exposure, indicating strong sensitivity to impulsive sounds. In contrast, P. stellatus showed no noticeable behavioral change, suggesting interspecific differences in noise responsiveness that may be linked to morphological and ecological traits. These findings affirm that even relatively low-intensity impulsive noise can elicit significant behavioral disturbances in sensitive fish species.
To address the second objective, the physiological responses of juvenile marine fishes to underwater noise from offshore wind farm construction and operation were assessed. Oxygen consumption rate (OCR), osmolality, and catecholamine levels were measured in Larimichthys crocea and Paralichthys olivaceus following controlled exposure to noise stimuli. L. crocea exhibited a significant increase in OCR under both short-term (1 h) and prolonged (24 h) pile driving noise exposure, with 24-h exposure resulting in a higher OCR compared to controls (0.316 vs. 0.225 mg O2 g−1 h−1, p < 0.01), indicating heightened metabolic activity and stress. Conversely, P. olivaceus showed a significant decrease in OCR after prolonged exposure, with OCR reduced from 0.113 to 0.105 mg O2 g−1 h−1, (p < 0.01), suggesting a potential suppression of metabolic functions under extended noise stress. In contrast, physiological responses to turbine operation noise were not significant in either species. Catecholamine levels remained unchanged following noise exposure, while osmolality generally mirrored OCR trends, with osmolality in L. crocea increasing from 224 to 271 mOsm kg−1 after 24-h pile driving exposure (p < 0.05). Notably, nocturnal increases in OCR were more prominent under noise conditions, indicating diel modulation of stress responses.
This study demonstrates that underwater noise from OWFs can disrupt both behavioral and physiological processes in marine fishes, with broader implications for ecosystem function and resilience. The observed alterations in behavioral patterns, metabolic rates, and stress physiology emphasize the need for integrating underwater noise as a critical factor in marine environmental management strategies. The synthesized findings on invertebrate responses further underscore the potential for community-wide impacts of underwater noise, especially when multiple taxa and ecological interactions are considered. These results highlight that species-specific traits and diel activity patterns can strongly influence vulnerability to acoustic stressors, reinforcing the importance of incorporating biological and ecological diversity into impact assessments. Future research should prioritize long-term and cumulative impact assessments that reflect realistic exposure scenarios, particularly for ecologically or economically important species in underrepresented regions such as East Asia. In addition, interdisciplinary approaches combining physiology, behavior, ecology, and acoustics will be essential for accurately predicting and mitigating noise impacts in marine ecosystems. Collectively, these findings contribute to the scientific foundation for establishing evidence-based exposure thresholds and conservation guidelines, thereby supporting the sustainable development of OWFs in diverse marine environments.
