Coating processes are widely used to apply thin liquid films onto moving substrates, where viscous forces arising from substrate motion compete with the liquid's surface tension. Traditional coating techniques, such as dip coating, blade coating, and slot-die coating, have been primarily developed for flat and continuous substrates and are therefore often analyzed under steady-state assumptions. However, growing industrial demand for uniform coating on discontinuous or non-flat substrates, along with the increasing complexity of fluid rheology, necessitates a better understanding of transient coating flows accompanied by extensional deformation.
This thesis investigates coating process with extensional flows and the complex behavior of viscoelastic fluids commonly used in such processes. The first part of the study involves computation of a dip coating of a finite cylinder using Newtonian fluids. A critical moment at which the final coating volume is determined is identified, and a simplified theoretical model is developed to quantitatively predict the coating volume based on the interfacial shape at that moment.
The second part explores the extensional behavior of complex fluids through experimental observations, particularly focusing on viscoelastic responses. The transition between visco-capillary and elasto-capillary regimes is analyzed using both a theoretical approach based on the Oldroyd-B model and a machine-learning-based method using a Transformer encoder.
