Hot-melt adhesives (HMAs) are thermoplastic bonding materials that develop adhesion by melting upon heating, flowing onto the substrate, and subsequently solidifying upon cooling. Due to the petroleum-based nature, limited recyclability, and non-biodegradable characteristics of conventional HMAs, recent research has focused on imparting sustainable properties to these materials. However, few previous studies have simultaneously satisfied all of these aspects, and most have remained limited in terms of overall sustainability. Accordingly, this study aimed to advance the development of sustainable HMAs beyond the limitations of existing approaches.

Biodegradable polyesters were selected as the base polymer to fundamentally impart biodegradability to the adhesives. As a semi-crystalline polymer, the biodegradable polyester inherently undergoes crystallization, which posed a challenge to the development of desirable adhesive properties. Highly crystalline aliphatic polymers unavoidably experience pronounced volumetric shrinkage during solidification, resulting in unintended deterioration of adhesion in the interface of a substrate. Even biodegradable random copolyesters with low crystallinity exhibit crystallization rates that are too rapid to allow sufficient wetting, thereby limiting the development of effective adhesive properties. Consequently, this study was intended to mitigate the crystallization-related limitations inherent to biodegradable polyesters that hinder adhesion, contributing to enhanced adhesive strength. Furthermore, by achieving removable adhesion and verifying biodegradability, this study developed a more advanced form of sustainable HMAs compared to previous approaches.

The crystallization behavior of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), a highly crystalline aliphatic polyester, was controlled by utilizing the nucleating effect. To ensure uniform dispersion, PBS was blended with rosin-based tackifiers possessing different acid values using a twin-screw extruder. The blends, as the HMAs, were analyzed with a focus on the effects of acid value on their compatibility, wettability, and crystallization behavior. Among the tackifiers, rosin with the highest acid value exhibited superior compatibility, providing advantages regarding rheological properties. In addition, surface energy analysis revealed enhanced wettability, indicating that the intrinsic adhesive characteristics of the HMAs were significantly improved. In addition to the accelerated crystallization rate induced by the nucleating effect, the blends exhibited uniform nucleation, which significantly reduced interfacial defects. As a result, the peel strength was appropriately positioned within the removable adhesion range, and the biodegradability of the formulation was confirmed through enzymatic degradation tests.

Despite its low crystallinity, PBAT exhibited poor wettability; therefore, structural modification was introduced by increasing segmental irregularity. To achieve this, polymerization was conducted by varying the ratio of ethylene glycol (EG) to 1,4-butanediol (BD), resulting in the transformation of the original two-segment structure into a four-segment copolyester. This structural modification significantly reduced both the crystallinity and rate of crystallization. The altered crystallization behavior dramatically increased the wetting time of the copolyester on the adherend, ultimately enhancing the lap shear strength beyond that of conventional ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)- based and polyolefins (PO)-based HMAs. Furthermore, by utilizing the distinct thermal properties of the individual segments, clean thermal debonding was achieved, highlighting the recyclability of the adhesive. These structural changes also positively impacted biodegradability, since the modified copolyester exhibited a much faster degradation rate compared to neat PBAT.

Ultimately, a novel sustainable HMAs was developed by controlling the crystallization behavior of biodegradable polymers. This study is expected to advance eco-friendly adhesive technologies and enhance their applicability across various industrial applications.
