This dissertation critically examines the dominant scholarly paradigm that conceptualizes Goguryeo[高句麗] as a sedentary agrarian polity and seeks to reconceptualize its character through a multifaceted cultural lens. Situated within the geopolitical milieu of northern Korea and northeastern China, early Goguryeo emerged at the intersection of agrarian, nomadic, and foraging traditions. Significantly, nomadic and hunting political systems were not merely external interlocutors but rather constitutive elements of the Goguryeo state itself. The ecological pressures of a cold and arid climatic phase, compounded by political volatility, engendered substantial demographic dislocations. Within this context, Goguryeo’s interactions with neighboring polities transcended superficial contact, resulting in systemic sociopolitical reconfigurations driven by both voluntary migrations and coerced relocations—processes that culminated in social integration. Against this backdrop, the dissertation investigates the economic, social, and cultural heterogeneity of Goguryeo with the aim of offering a renewed interpretive framework for understanding its state formation.
One of the most fundamental factors influencing the character of Goguryeo’s statehood was its natural geography and ecological conditions. While environmental factors do not unilaterally or deterministically dictate the course of history, they functioned as both structural constraints and enabling conditions in shaping political, economic, and cultural systems, particularly in pre-modern contexts. In terms of climate, Goguryeo’s early center was located on the marginal agrarian frontier—an area where cultivation was technically feasible but insufficient for sustained and reliable agricultural productivity. The feasibility and efficiency of agriculture are analytically distinct, and the limited development of agricultural technology in early societies engendered structural imperatives to pursue diversified modes of subsistence.
Notably, during the period of Goguryeo’s existence, East Asia entered a prolonged phase of climatic deterioration characterized by cooling and aridification. Beginning around 29 BCE, temperatures progressively declined and aridity increased, culminating in the so-called Little Ice Age, which persisted until approximately 600 CE. This climatic transformation was accompanied by the erosion of agriculture as the dominant mode of production, recurrent dynastic upheavals, and widespread demographic displacements.
In pre-modern societies, economic structures were inextricably linked to ecological conditions. The incorporation of newly integrated populations—particularly nomadic and foraging groups—through both trade and conquest, fundamentally challenges reductionist interpretations that frame Goguryeo’s economy as exclusively agrarian. In practice, agriculture, hunting, and pastoralism in early Goguryeo did not function as discrete or mutually exclusive modes of subsistence. Instead, they constituted a flexible and adaptive system shaped by ecological variability and shifting economic imperatives. The characteristics of these incorporated groups, in conjunction with environmental constraints, rendered it structurally inevitable for hunting and pastoralism to occupy a prominent role in Goguryeo’s economic configuration.
Simultaneously, Goguryeo played a pivotal role in reconstituting the Yemaek[濊貊] network, which had previously been under the hegemony of Gojoseon[古朝鮮], and thereby emerged as a dominant force in transregional exchange across Northeast Asia. It is widely believed that Goguryeo’s expansion was facilitated by its integration of the previously fragmented Yemaek network that had been divided between Buyeo[夫餘] and Goguryeo. Of particular note is that Goguryeo’s principal export commodities were heavily concentrated in leather goods, most notably sable fur[貂皮]. This indicates that Goguryeo’s indigenous productive capacities—shaped by its ecological environment—were strategically augmented through sustained trade with surrounding nomadic and foraging polities.
In the process of territorial expansion, Goguryeo could not disregard the role of nomadic and foraging populations. These groups, engaged in specialized subsistence strategies such as hunting and pastoralism, provided the state with critical economic and military resources. To maximize administrative efficiency, the state strategically incorporated these communities while preserving their indigenous production systems, rather than forcibly assimilating them into sedentary agriculture. The primary function of state governance was to organize all inhabitants within its territory into a state-regulated populace[齊民] and to extract fiscal obligations from them. In this sense, taxation was not merely an economic practice, but a symbolic assertion of political sovereignty over subordinate populations. However, due to the social heterogeneity and structural complexity of Goguryeo, a singular, uniform mode of governance proved inadequate. This necessitated the development of flexible and multilayered administrative strategies. As the state’s territorial domain expanded, these modalities had to be progressively institutionalized and structurally articulated, becoming a persistent imperative of statecraft. In this regard, reinterpretations of Goguryeo’s conquest of the Kitan[稗麗] as recorded in the Gwanggaeto Stele[廣開土王碑], along with references to the Yu-in[遊人] and Sepo[細布] in the Book of Sui[隋書], offer concrete evidence of how Goguryeo systematically integrated and mobilized nomadic and foraging populations within its political-economic framework.
Differences in production structures—agriculture, hunting, and pastoralism—extended beyond subsistence and exerted structural influences on the formation of distinct social systems and norms. In particular, marriage operated as a mechanism for mediating relationships among families, kin groups, and social strata, reflecting the distribution of power and access to resources within the community. In this regard, marriage functioned as a core institutional apparatus—both shaping and being embedded within the broader sociopolitical order. Viewed in this light, Goguryeo’s practice of levirate marriage[兄死取嫂婚] serves as a salient marker of its northern sociocultural identity.
Furthermore, the two marital practices observed in Goguryeo—son-in-law chamber marriage[壻屋婚] and levirate marriage—functioned as distinct systems aligned with different social strata. These divergences likely originated from ethnic differences between the indigenous Goguryeo population and Buyeo migrants. Contrary to earlier assumptions, lower-status groups may have exhibited a stronger preference for son-in-law chamber marriage over levirate marriage. Moreover, while levirate marriage was not attested in Baekje[百濟] or Silla[新羅], it was prevalent among northern polities such as the Xiongnu[匈奴], suggesting that Goguryeo’s sociocultural orientation was deeply informed by northern traditions.
Thus, the analysis of Goguryeo’s marriage customs offers a valuable case study for examining the kingdom’s enduring ties with northern societies and its processes of cultural integration. While marriage systems reflect the practical distribution of power within a community, the founding myth serves as a symbolic apparatus that legitimizes and sacralizes these arrangements. Together, marriage customs and the founding myth illuminate the structural logics and politico-cultural orientations of Goguryeo from both material and symbolic dimensions.
Regarding the founding myth, traditional interpretations of Yuhwa[柳花] as a symbolic representation of the Mother of Grain Goddess[穀母神] have long reinforced the agrarian-sedentary characterization of Goguryeo. However, a reevaluation of figures such as Yuhwa or Susin[隧神] may highlight the enduring presence of northern cultural elements within Goguryeo society. The archery prowess[善射] of the kingdom’s founder, Jumong[朱蒙], was not merely a martial virtue, but constituted a critical political attribute for legitimizing royal authority within northern polities. This skill, closely associated with royal hunting activities, provided a mythological foundation for sacral kingship. The animals obtained through hunting—particularly the white deer, said to be capturable only by the sovereign—were imbued with auspicious significance. Such symbolism corresponds to Goguryeo’s distinctive model of divine kingship, deeply rooted in northern steppe traditions.
The conception of the state as a homogeneous community defined by a singular bloodline or ethnicity continues to operate implicitly, particularly within historical narratives and discourses on national identity. This notion, divorced from historical reality, demands critical reassessment. The state should instead be understood as a complex and contingent formation. Goguryeo, accordingly, was not reducible to the history of a single ethnos but was a political entity forged through the dynamic interplay of diverse political forces and regional communities. Recognizing this complexity provides a methodological foundation for interpreting Goguryeo’s history in a more nuanced and multidimensional manner. Its statehood was not a fixed essence but a historically contingent outcome, shaped through sustained interaction with the surrounding world. This structure was not only a key condition for Goguryeo’s survival and governance, but also a constitutive outcome that enabled its continuity. Accordingly, this dissertation seeks to reconceptualize the historical status of Goguryeo through a complex cultural framework, offering a theoretical basis for a richer understanding of its historical trajectory.
