This study employed Actor-Network Theory (ANT) as a theoretical framework to analyze the changing agency and translation of K-pop fandoms in conflicts. Through a comparative analysis of two cases separated by a 15-year interval—the TVXQ exclusive contract dispute and the HYBE-NewJeans conflict—this research examined fandoms' translation strategies, changes in agency, and network reconfiguration capabilities in conflict situations.
The findings reveal that K-pop fandoms are active actants that reconstruct industrial networks. In the TVXQ case, fandoms mobilized legal institutions and the general public into their network through the problem definition of rectifying unfair contracts, demonstrating differentiated network and translation strategies as obligatory passage points became diversified. In the NewJeans case, under the new industrial structure of the multi-label system, fandoms employed selective solidarity strategies, forming alliances with certain actants while countering competing networks with others.
The changes in non-human actors were particularly notable. Comparing the two cases across a 15-year span, more diverse non-human actors—including social media platforms, electronic signature tools, and documents—were mobilized into networks, functioning as active actants that fundamentally transformed fandoms' translation. Changes also appeared in fandoms' methods of constructing representativeness, evolving from informal representation based on information and devotion to institutional representation that combines democratic procedures using digital tools with legal expertise, demonstrating fandoms' political maturity. Furthermore, individual group fandom conflicts expanded into industry-wide solidarity, confirming the continuous reconfiguration of K-pop network boundaries. However, despite these changes and developments, the binding power of legal non-human actants such as exclusive contracts and trademark rights acted as structural limitations constraining fandoms' translation capabilities, simultaneously revealing the strength of institutional black boxes in modern society and the constraints on fandom agency, exposing the complex reality where translation successes and limitations coexist.
This study offers a new perspective differentiated from existing fandom research by analyzing fandoms through the lens of Actor-Network Theory. It holds academic significance by systematically tracing how emotional attachment transforms into political power, revealing the roles of non-human actors to present new possibilities for fandom research in the digital age, and providing new theoretical resources for understanding the agency of audience groups in cultural industries by approaching K-pop as the outcome of complex actor-networks. However, there are several limitations to this study. Diverse voices within fandoms were not reflected as fandoms were treated as a single actant and there were constraints in fully evaluating final outcomes or network restabilization patterns for ongoing cases. Also, other important actors within the K-pop industrial network were not sufficiently dealt with, due to the focus on fandoms and other specific actants. To overcome these limitations, longitudinal studies over extended periods and follow-up research encompassing various actants will be necessary.
