Dental VR-RET(Virtual Reality-based Real-time Ergonomics Training)을 개발하고, 그 사용성과 효과성을 종합적으로 검증하는 것을 목적으로 하였다.

This study aimed to develop and evaluate Dental VR-RET (Virtual Reality-based Real-time Ergonomics Training), an immersive training system designed to improve dental students' ergonomic posture during clinical procedures. Despite the high prevalence of awkward postures and musculoskeletal risk in dental practice, existing preclinical training lacks effective tools for real-time postural correction. To address this gap, the system was developed using a Unity-based VR environment combined with motion-tracking sensors, enabling real-time feedback derived from the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment(RULA). The system provides users with visual and auditory feedback during a dental scaling procedure by detecting upper limb and trunk postures and assessing their ergonomic risk levels.
A three-phase experimental design (pre-intervention, intervention, post-intervention) was conducted with 52 dental students randomly assigned to either the experimental group (real-time feedback provided) or the control group (no feedback). The results demonstrated that the experimental group showed significant improvements in posture, including a reduction in high-risk positions and improved time-weighted posture scores, even during the post-intervention phase without feedback. These results suggests the development of sustained ergonomic awareness rather than temporary compliance. The effectiveness of the system was further supported by usability surveys (NASA-TLX and VR usability scale), which revealed high ratings for immersion, ease of use, and educational utility. Additionally, qualitative data from open-ended survey responses and semi-structured interviews highlighted strengths such as realistic simulation, opportunities for repetitive practice, and self-directed learning support. Users also provided constructive feedback for system refinement.
This study contributes to the field of dental education by integrating immersive VR technology with real-time ergonomic feedback, providing an effective solution for posture training in clinical skill development. Dental VR-RET holds potential as a scalable, self-directed digital training tool that can enhance body awareness and support healthier working habits among dental trainees.
