In recent years, individual ceramic studios have played an increasingly significant role in arts and culture education. Ceramic studios now serve not only as production spaces but also as cultural education hubs that transmit craft techniques and promote a broader understanding of craft culture. Despite their growing significance, academic research on ceramic studios as platforms for arts and culture education remains limited. Specifically, no empirical study has analyzed ceramic studio education or proposed a concrete instructional model.
Therefore, this study aims to identify the current state and challenges of ceramic studio-based art and culture education, develop an educational program to address these issues, and evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed program in practice.
To assess the current landscape, this study conducted four investigations: (1) a survey of ceramic studios offering arts and culture education in the Seoul Metropolitan Area; (2) interviews with instructor-ceramists; (3) a learner survey; and (4) a review of existing education programs. The findings revealed that many ceramists engage in cultural education primarily as a means of financially sustaining their studio operations, which is crucial for maintaining their ongoing artistic practice. Moreover, most ceramists simultaneously fulfill the roles of both artist and educator. As a result, operators often design curricula around their needs, which limits responsiveness to learners and hinders innovation. Meanwhile, the growing number of learners engaging in ceramics as a long-term hobby has created sustained demand for more diverse and systematically structured programming. However, current offerings have failed to meet these expectations, leading to a gradual decline in learner satisfaction. A particularly significant issue is the lack of systematic hand-building curricula for long-term learners.
The challenges identified through the analysis can be attributed to three primary factors: (1) structural constraints inherent in studio operations; (2) identity conflicts experienced by ceramist-educators; and (3) a lack of pedagogical competence. Since most studios are led by individual ceramists, time and resource constraints are severe. Furthermore, many instructors lack formal training in pedagogy, resulting in limited capacity to develop new programs. To address these limitations, it is crucial to enhance operational efficiency of the studio, expand instructional capacity, and transform social perceptions of arts and culture education to foster institutional support for curriculum development.
In this context, this study develops and implements an instructional program to deliver practical solutions, aiming to enhance learning achievements and experience while contributing to the broader advancement of ceramics education. The program centers on the Pressed Modular Forming Technique, a hand-building technique developed to combine features of press molding and slab construction, inspired by the production of Yixing teapots in China. This technique is well-suited for the precise fabrication of complex ceramic forms through modular assembly.
This technique was developed through four research dimensions:
First, the study analyzed Yixing teapot production and classified 19 core construction techniques. By making tacit knowledge explicit, the technique contributes to more efficient and accelerated skill development. With these basic techniques, learners can produce a wide range of objects.
Second, from a material standpoint, the study selected paper clay for its resistance to cracking during modular assembly and drying. To improve its stability during storage and handling, the study conducted experiments to address common issues such as deformation and microbial spoilage.
Third, the study defined five categories of objects commonly used in daily life—cups, plates/bowls, boxes, bottles/jars, and teapots—based on similarities in use and construction methods. Within each category, learners are encouraged to create with a degree of freedom. By encouraging pre-planned, purposeful making rather than impulsive production, the program supports more efficient skill development. Completed works, when used in everyday life, serve to expand the boundaries of ceramics education into everyday contexts.
Fourth, the study designed a modular plaster mold system to enable both precision and form diversity. Based on geometric primitives—cylinders, spheres, and cubes—a set of 15 modular molds is designed to be recombined to produce nearly all functional object types.
Based on these developments, the study created demonstration pieces for each object type. These works serve as visual references that help learners understand the technique and strengthen their motivation.
Finally, the program was implemented with 21 learners over an eight-week period to assess its educational impact, resulting in three key findings:
First, the pressed modular forming technique enabled even beginners to achieve high-quality results. Learners quickly understood the forming process and gained a sense of accomplishment through pre-planned production, leading to noticeable skill improvement and consistent quality in outcomes.
Second, despite the use of standardized molds, the technique demonstrated flexibility and scalability through the creative applications of learners.
Third, by progressively producing functional objects in stages of increasing technical complexity, the program empirically demonstrated the potential of a systematic hand-building curriculum for skill development. Learner satisfaction was also notably high.
The practical outcomes of this study demonstrate that the technique is particularly well-suited for the precise fabrication of complex ceramic forms. Beyond addressing the limitations of existing hand-building programs, this method also has the potential to expand the scope of arts and culture education in ceramics while fostering creativity and professionalism in instruction.
Rather than stopping at identifying challenges in arts and culture education within ceramic studios, this study develops a practical instructional program, applies it in authentic educational contexts, and validates its effectiveness through empirical analysis. In contemporary practice, ceramic studios function not only as production spaces but also as educational platforms that deliver structured learning and foster broader public engagement with ceramic culture. The Pressed Modular Forming Technique, as proposed in this study, provides a practical and pedagogically robust approach aligned with these objectives. It offers a practical framework for enhancing both the quality and systematic delivery of ceramic arts and culture education.
