In recent science education discourse, scientific practices have emerged as a key concept, with increasing emphasis on cultivating students’ ability to apply and transfer scientific concepts in authentic contexts. However, existing practice-based approaches have often focused on whether students can perform specific tasks, showing limitations in interpretively exploring how students investigate and make meaning of scientific concepts-including their reasoning processes, emotional responses, and interactions within learning communities.
This study argues for the need to analyze the process of forming and internalizing scientific concepts not merely as a matter of functional execution but from the perspective of practices in science, which encompasses historical-philosophical contexts and human meaning. Specifically, this research aims to investigate how high school students are invited into, participate in, and come to authentically understand science within a learning context grounded in the tradition of scientific practices.
Critically responding to the limitations of conventional practice-based frameworks-which tend to reduce learning to observable performance and measurable cognition-this study embraces an educational perspective that recognizes learning as a holistic human activity. Through in-depth cases, it seeks to reveal the interpretive processes through which students construct understanding, thereby contributing to the philosophical and pedagogical shift in science education from skill execution to meaning-making and ontological transformation. The guiding research question is as follows:
“How do students experience Invitation and Participation in a science inquiry club grounded in Practices in Science, and how is Authentic Understanding formed through this process?”
The study employs a qualitative case study methodology, involving four regular high school students who participated in a three-session inquiry-based science program designed from the perspective of the Practices in Science. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, surveys, and inquiry reports. Individual case analyses and cross-case comparisons were conducted using the analytical framework of “Invitation-Participation-Authentic Understanding,” following a thick description approach.
The results revealed that each of the four students experienced the inquiry process differently across all three dimensions.
S02 initiated the inquiry process by experiencing cognitive dissonance between experimental results and their prior conceptions. This dissonance prompted active participation in community-based scientific practices, including experimentation, dialogue, and the reconstruction of conceptual understanding. S12 approached inquiry by recognizing the inherent limitations of scientific concepts in explaining certain phenomena. Through independently constructed conceptual frameworks and the selective incorporation of peer feedback, S12 engaged in a reflective process that probed the boundaries and ontological conditions of scientific understanding. S13 initiated inquiry with a philosophical orientation, questioning the epistemological foundations of scientific knowledge. This student facilitated collaborative discussions and demonstrated deep conceptual engagement by reconstructing the conditions under which scientific explanations are considered valid. S08 entered the inquiry process by identifying a dissonance between everyday experiences and textbook representations of science. Through iterative cycles of experimentation, quantitative analysis, and peer collaboration, S08 developed a problematized understanding of scientific concepts grounded in real-world contexts.
By comparing and contrasting the characteristics and contexts of these inquiry processes, the study analyzed how authentic understanding unfolds according to the three criteria: Invitation, Participation, and Authentic Understanding. Across all cases, students were initially invited into inquiry through moments of conceptual conflict or uncertainty. Through diverse forms of participation-including experimentation, discussion, and collaboration-they engaged in interpretive practices to construct and justify their own scientific understanding. The resulting authentic understanding transcended the mere acceptance of correct answers, manifesting as meaning that was emotionally, ethically, and communally grounded.
Differences between cases were categorized into two types-Type A and Type B-based on structural dimensions.
First, Invitation was classified as either externally triggered (Type A) or internally reflective (Type B). Type A students were drawn into inquiry through observable dissonance (e.g., unexpected results or anomalous phenomena), while Type B students initiated inquiry through internal questioning about the validity, applicability, or ontological status of scientific concepts.
Second, Participation structures differed between community-centered (Type A) and self-reflective (Type B) orientations. Type A students engaged in concept co-construction through interactive practices such as collaborative experimentation and discussion. In contrast, Type B students relied on internal reasoning while critically interpreting and selectively incorporating peer input, indicating a self-directed approach to participation.
Third, the mechanisms of conceptual formation in achieving Authentic Understanding were categorized as the redefinition of terms and boundaries (Type A) versus the exploration of conceptual limits and ontological conditions (Type B).
These structural typologies were organically connected to six dimensions of authentic understanding and served as interpretive lenses to illuminate the cognitive, emotional, and social nuances of students’ learning trajectories. Beyond mere categorization, this framework revealed how individual students constructed and personalized scientific meanings through inquiry, transforming abstract concepts into lived knowledge.
In conclusion, this study reveals that authentic understanding in science education is not the product of internalizing predetermined answers, but rather emerges through dynamic processes of collaborative inquiry and personal transformation. These findings call for a reconceptualization of science education as an integrative space where learners not only construct disciplinary knowledge but also develop epistemic agency, reshape their identities, and engage in reflective modes of being. Furthermore, this research demonstrates the distinctive capacity of qualitative case study methodology to illuminate the internal processes of meaning-making, epistemological shifts, and developmental trajectories that underlie student learning and growth.
