This thesis examines the novels of Park Kyung-ri(박경리, 1926~2008)—from “Calculation”(「계산」, 1955), her debut work, to Land(『토지』, 1969~1994), her magnum opus—and aims to reveal the trajectory of her literary journey, as she constantly explored the possibilities of love, mainly focusing on the relationships between men and women. In previous studies on Park Kyung-ri’s novels, the dominant view has been that she overcame the autobiographical and subjectivist characteristics of her early works and gradually secured a historical and holistic perspective on the objective world, culminating in Land. This evaluation is mainly based on a representational perspective and a view that perceives the subjective and objective as a dichotomous relationship of superiority. However, this thesis seeks to read the ‘love’ in Park Kyung-ri’s novels from the perspective of ‘embodiment’ rather than ‘representation’. This is because, upon close examination of her essays and novels, it becomes clear that for her, the theme of love is not interpreted from a perspective that views pairs such as subjective and objective, emotion and reason, soul and body, and romance and reality as relationships of superiority and opposition. The perspective of embodiment is intended to appropriately address the characteristics of Park Kyung-ri’s love narrative, which takes the starting point of love as the realm of soul and romance while thoroughly adhering to the historical and material reality of the ‘body’. When focusing on how the issue of ‘love’ is dealt with as a recurring archetype throughout Park Kyung-ri’s novels, it can be found that the way writer Park Kyung-ri relates to society does not consistently converge to ‘objective distancing’ or ‘securing a holistic perspective’, contrary to conventional idea.
The basic stance of this thesis is that Park Kyung-ri’s ideal(romance) for the metaphysical material of love is embodied through the bodies of the characters in the novel. Therefore, the regulatory ideal of love operating in Park Kyung-ri’s novels can be grasped through character analysis. However, this ideal of love is never realized unilaterally. First, the embodiment of love takes place on the foundation of historical and accidental reality, and second, the embodiment of love is achieved through vulnerable and imperfect bodies. For this reason, the repetitive performances of love in Park Kyung-ri’s novels appear not as a transparent embodiment of a regulatory ideal but as numerous failures that are refracted, suppressed, and ruptured. At this time, the mysterious tension and balance, conflict and harmony between soul and body are the core aspects of Park Kyung-ri’s love narrative.
Meanwhile, this thesis focuses on the fact that Park Kyung-ri understood love in antagonism or contradiction with ‘freedom’. Unlike the tendency to emphasize the meaning of the emergence/establishment of the ‘liberal individual’ as a modern subject when the subject of love was dealt with in the Korean literary world from the early modern period, love for Park Kyung-ri appears to be in constant conflict with the concept of ‘free subject’. The ideal of love embodied in Park Kyung-ri’s novels does not reveal or guarantee the inner self of a free individual but is consistently depicted as a force that threatens the self-identity of the subject.
This thesis adopts a structure that deals with seemingly contradictory aspects of the embodiment of love through Chapters 2 and 3, and then comprehensively clarifies the meaning in Chapter 4. In Chapter 2, the ‘reality’ and ‘body’, which can be said to be the conditions and stage for the embodiment of love, are relatively emphasized. On the other hand, in Chapter 3, the ‘ideal(romance)’ of love, which tries to resist the gravity of reality, is highlighted.
Chapter 2 mainly deals with Park Kyung-ri’s novels of the 1950s. Reading “Calculation”(「계산」, 1955) and “Desolate place”(「벽지(僻地)」, 1958) together, it is examined that the mysophobic characters, which can be said to be the archetypal characters of Park Kyung-ri’s novels, share the problem consciousness of “mechanization of emotion” in Korean society in the 1950s. Here, the critical perception of the reality that makes dead emotions and reason alienated from the body the only resources of love is prominent. At this time, the emotional capacity of Hoe-in(회인) of “Calculation” is not an ability isolated in the controlling or free subject, but a response to the involuntary stimuli that ‘captures’ the subject and reveals ontological passivity. Through this, it becomes clear that for Park Kyung-ri, emotion is a way of recognizing objective reality and a key to forming a relationship of love. On the other hand, the writer’s persistent criticism of the ‘marriage’ system can be said to be a backlash against society’s attempt to fix marriage as the ‘completion’ of love, thereby eliminating the dangers of love. Drifting Island(『표류도』, 1959) and “Sea of Remorse”(「회오의 바다」, 1963) symbolize marriage as choosing an “island” as a fluid and unstable zone rather than a safe zone. In Drifting Island and Lament (『애가』, 1958), The Lovers of Those Brothers(『그 형제의 연인들』, 1962–63), the aspects in which ‘present happiness’ through love is overwhelmed by ‘future happiness’ promised by marriage repeatedly appear. Through this, social tactics to control love by propagandizing safety and happiness are exposed.
Chapter 3 will deal with the aspects in which the ‘ideal (romance)’ of love is revealed through repetition and leap even in the midst of a desperate reality. Park Kyung-ri placed compassion(연민) and ‘love in partnership’(연애) a direct comparative structure, and through this structure, the status and outline of ‘love in partnership’ in her novels are more concretely understood. In Lament, Moon Jung-gyu(문정규) transitions to compassion, a form of universal love, after experiencing the failure of ‘love in partnership’, whereas Song Byung-rim(송병림), the philanthropist in Lake of My Heart(『내 마음의 호수』, 1960), displays a reverse progression, moving from compassion toward ‘love in partnership’. This process reveals that ‘love in partnership’ cannot be simply replaced or supplemented by compassion; furthermore, it highlights the potential emptiness of compassion when it disregards ‘love in partnership’. Fault(『단층』, 1974), written approximately 15 years after these two works, revisits this same problem-consciousness. In contrast to compassion, which, as depicted in these works, allows one to remain complete and fulfilled while thoroughly grounded in the ‘self’, ‘love in partnership’ is portrayed as an experience that involves the continuous relinquishing of the ‘self’. Lee Ga-hwa(이가화) in Market and Battlefield(『시장과 전장』, 1964) embodies this ideal of love to its fullest extent. Although this portrayal may represent a somewhat soaring leap beyond the gravitational field of reality that the author has consistently maintained, Park Kyung-ri positions Lee Ga-hwa as a counterpart to Nam Ji-yeong(남지영)—a figure who continues the lineage of archetypal characters—thereby articulating an ideal of love that embraces vulnerability, demands a more proactive dismantling of the fortress of self, and calls for a reaching out towards the other.
Drawing on the characteristics of Park Kyung-ri’s love narrative as explored in Chapters 2 and 3, Chapter 4 clarifies its comprehensive meaning, particularly focusing on the relationship between sin and love. Green Zone(『녹지대』, 1964–65) and The Sinners’ Task(『죄인들의 숙제』, 1969–70) exemplify the writer’s endeavor, following Market and Battlefield to interweave realistic problems and romantic spirit like the weft and warp of a fabric. In particular, the generational narrative of Green Zone and the perception of life as a series of disconnections—represented not by a line(線) but by a ring(環)—as seen in The Sinners’ Task, provide a crucial foundation for addressing love across the expansive temporal scope presented in Land. This allows us to interpret love as the most potent “primordial present”—an experience that, even if fleeting, seizes the body and leaves behind remnants with which to rebuild life anew. Reaching Choi Seo-hee(최서희) in Land, we witness how love transforms an individual’s life across their entire lifespan. Here too, the ideal of love is consistently portrayed as ‘losing oneself’. In relation to this, the themes of ‘solitary reason’ and ‘relational emotion’ depicted through Hoe-in in “Calculation” come to full bloom through Seo-hee in Land, revealing ethical actions constructed not through ‘ethical contemplation’ or ‘guilt’, but by love. This vividly demonstrates one aspect of how love, within the continuum of existence, generates diverse modes of life.
When centering on the issue of love, Park Kyung-ri’s novels present two polar opposite character types. First, mysophobic characters, such as Hoe-in in “Calculation”, form a lineage of archetypal figures in Park Kyung-ri’s novels that extends to Im Myeong-hee(임명희) in Land. Although yearning for the ideal of love, they ultimately fail to escape the confines of self-preservation due to their mysophobic personality. While they display a strong resistance to reality, they only serve to highlight the immense gravitational pull of reality and the dominion of sin. In contrast, figures such as Lee Ga-hwa in Market and Battlefield and Byuldang-ahssi(별당아씨) in Land are among those characters who occasionally burst forth in Park Kyung-ri’s novels as if having leaped beyond reality’s gravitational field. These figures cast aside their bodies, wealth, ideologies, status, and even their lives solely for the sake of love, embodying love’s ideal to the highest degree. These figures might be considered Park Kyung-ri’s romantic ideal, yet the rich inner descriptions of characters—one of the strengths of Park Kyung-ri’s writing—are noticeably absent from them. It seems their voices, leaning towards romanticism, do not progress beyond revealing the tragedy born from the chasm between ideal and reality.
Given this situation, the life of Choi Seo-hee, as depicted in Land, demonstrates that the boundaries between these two character types are by no means definitive. For Park Kyung-ri, the central issue in the embodiment of love lies in the fact that love, unable to be incarnated or to seize the body, cannot implant the possibility of an alternate life within reality. Love, even if fleeting, snatches the body from a continuum of life saturated with the dominion of sin, leaving behind a legacy capable of constructing a new way of living. It is in her affirmation of moments of passion that seem to encapsulate eternity, even amidst her efforts to objectively survey historical reality—it is in this delicate balance that we recognize Park Kyung-ri’s unique artistic achievement: the unfolding of love within the ongoing current of life. Life, fragmented by violence and sin, salvages from the remnants of imperfect love the materials with which to construct a renewed life.
