Within conventional music theory, musical events are generally identified with sound events. However, during the common-practice period, many composers utilized a variety of rests to create distinctive listening experiences by violating listener expectations. Focusing on the temporal structure of music, this thesis examines how musical rests influence the real-time metric experience of lay listeners. The present study employs Danuta Mirka’s dynamic model of meter (2009) as a central approach, examining examples from Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, and others to explore the significance of rests as metrical events.
The dynamic model is predicated on the cognitively-oriented metric theory, which has evolved significantly since the late 20th century. Its goal is to explain how listeners process meter in real-time, guided by their musical intuition. Observing different “metric contexts” (such as metrical dissonance and local conflicts), the model demonstrates how multiple hypotheses compete simultaneously within the listener’s mind.
This thesis employs the dynamic model to examine two types of rest events: downbeat rests and general pauses. First, downbeat rests are divided into two categories, depending on their metric context: “loud rests” and “ambiguous rests”. The study subsequently investigates the role of these rests in the listener’s metric experience. The result suggests that loud rests function as "wake-up calls," prompting the listener’s internal processor to focus on the current state of music and reassess the meter. On the other hand, ambiguous rests serve as “tipping points,” pushing listeners to select an alternative analysis within the context of the metrical dissonance.
A general pause, defined as a prolonged cessation of sound in the middle of a piece, functions differently at the surface and deeper levels of the meter. On the surface, multiple empty beats in these pauses serve to diminish the listener’s perception of the current meter, thereby enabling a quick shift to a new metrical pattern. At a deeper hypermetrical level, they disrupt the regular hypermetric structure, each depending on the listener’s metric, harmonic, and gestural expectations.
The main aim of the thesis is to demonstrate that the meaning of rests is not fixed outside of time. Mirka’s dynamic model of meter posits that listeners perceive “the present” as an extended concept. Likewise, downbeat rests and general pauses can contain multiple layers of meaning, incorporating previously formed contexts and acquiring retrospective significance even after the pause ends.
