This study explores the experiences of Chinese international students in South Korea, focusing on their motivations for studying abroad and identity formation through the lens of “involution” (内卷)—a concept that captures the structural pressures of excessive, self-reinforcing competition. In recent years, escalating educational competition in China has driven many students to seek overseas education not simply to enhance their credentials, but as a strategic escape from the relentless cycle of internal academic pressure. For these students, studying abroad represents a form of resistance to involution, exemplified by the strategy of “leaving first and returning later (先出去, 再回来),” in which they aim to reimagine their identities and futures within different institutional and social contexts.
This research focuses on Chinese students enrolled at prestigious universities in Seoul, examining why they choose South Korea, the educational and symbolic value they expect to gain, and how they attempt to reconstruct their identities and strengthen their global competitiveness through the elite status of these institutions. While studying abroad was once considered an elite privilege, it has now become a massified educational pathway, resulting in a sharp increase in the number of Chinese students overseas. This has given rise to a new wave of “involution” on a transnational scale—a structural condition where individuals are locked in zero-sum competition despite limited opportunities for meaningful advancement.
Although these students initially sought to escape China’s hypercompetitive environment, many find themselves re-entering similar patterns of competition abroad. They face pressure not only from host societies but also from other Chinese international students, as overseas educational spaces become sites of renewed symbolic struggle. This phenomenon of “re-involution” reveals how global education can reproduce, rather than resolve, the logics of structural inequality and symbolic distinction.
Ultimately, this study interrogates whether overseas education functions as a viable strategy for upward mobility, or whether it merely relocates the pressures of involution to new cultural and institutional contexts. By doing so, it sheds light on the broader social implications of international education and critically examines whether alternative imaginaries of success and identity formation are possible beyond the cycle of endless competition.
