This study addresses the issue of choice overload, a salient
challenge for consumers in the contemporary digital environment
saturated with information and options. As the consumer landscape
shifts to an online-centric model, individuals face cognitive burdens
and psychological dissonance from near-infinite alternatives and data.
To cope with this complexity, consumers employ an "adaptive
toolbox" of efficient purchasing strategies to minimize cognitive effort.
This research investigates the use of "influencer" as a prominent tool
within this adaptive toolbox.
Prior research on influencer has predominantly adopted a marketing
communications perspective, focusing on their impact on brand
attitudes or purchase intentions. This approach, however, falls short
of fully explaining why and how consumers integrate influencer into
their complex decision-making processes. That is, the existing
literature has largely centered on the "production of influence" by
influencer, leaving the "consumption of influence" from the
consumer's viewpoint relatively under-researched.
Departing from the premise that consumers utilize influencer as
judgmental heuristics and facilitators in their purchase decisions, this
study sets forth three primary research objectives. First, it seeks to
explore the fundamental motivations driving consumers to use
influencer in complex purchase decisions and to delineate the
multidimensional structure of these motivations. Second, it aims to
analyze the differential effects of these motivational factors on
consumers' outcome expectancies and ultimate satisfaction, examining
the direct relationships among them. Third, this study will verify the
mediating role of outcome expectancies in the process through which
motivations translate into satisfaction, thereby elucidating an
integrated mechanism of "Motivation → Expectancy → Satisfaction."
A multi-stage research design was employed to address these
objectives. Initially, to derive the motivational factors for using
influencer, preliminary items were developed through a scoping
literature review. An Exploratory Factor Analysis(EFA) was then
conducted on data from a first survey to uncover the structure of
these motivations. Subsequently, to ensure the stability and validity of
the identified factor structure, a second survey was administered, and
a dual EFA-CFA analysis procedure was completed by performing a
Confirmatory Factor Analysis(CFA) on the new data. Using the data
from the second survey, multiple regression analyses were conducted
to examine the direct effects of the motivational factors on outcome
expectancies and satisfaction, as well as the direct effect of outcome
expectancies on satisfaction. Finally, a regression-based mediation
analysis, specifically using a bootstrapping method with 5,000
resamples to generate bias-corrected confidence intervals, was
performed to rigorously test the mediating effects of outcome
expectancies and compare the relative importance of each path within
a parallel mediation model.
The key findings of this study are as follows. First, consumer
motivations for using influencer are not monolithic but constitute a
five-factor, multidimensional structure: (1) Information Seeking for
efficient knowledge acquisition; (2) Emotional Fulfillment, which
involves seeking enjoyment through a sense of connection with the
influencer; (3) Economic Benefits, aimed at securing tangible gains
such as discounts or group purchasing opportunities; (4) Consumption
Guidance, which involves obtaining information or directives that
facilitate rational and efficient consumption; and (5) Vicarious
Experience, which entails preemptively experiencing consumption
through others to mitigate the risk of purchase failure. The high
levels of "Vicarious Experience" and "Information Seeking" confirm
that consumers primarily leverage influencer as practical and rational
aids in their decision-making.
Second, each motivational factor exerted a differential influence
depending on the dimension of satisfaction. Process satisfaction,
defined as the convenience of the purchasing journey itself, was
significantly enhanced by utilitarian motivations that reduce cognitive
effort, such as "Information Seeking" and "Consumption Guidance." In
contrast, outcome satisfaction, the ultimate contentment with the
purchased product, was most strongly predicted by "Emotional
Fulfillment" stemming from psychological bonds with the influencer.
Motivational factors that directly enhance the value of the outcome,
such as "Economic Benefits" and "Vicarious Experience," also played
a significant role. This empirically demonstrates a dual-satisfaction
structure, wherein consumers seek "efficiency" in the process and
"emotional and tangible value" in the outcome of their
influencer-mediated purchases.
Third, "outcome expectancy" was identified as a core psychological
mechanism explaining the conversion of motivation into satisfaction.
The expectation of reducing choice costs—the time and effort spent
on decision-making—emerged as the most fundamental mediator,
underlying all paths to satisfaction. Furthermore, process satisfaction
was primarily shaped by the expected reduction in both choice costs
and post-choice regret. In contrast, outcome satisfaction, while also
grounded in the expectation of reduced choice costs, followed a
distinct path, being fulfilled through expectations of positive
psychological states such as choice justification and choice confidence.
This suggests that consumers use influencers to gain active
psychological endorsement for their choices.
In conclusion, this study reframes the role of influencers from a
consumer-centric perspective, revealing that consumers simultaneously
pursue the dual goals of cognitive efficiency and emotional assurance.
This dual-satisfaction structure mirrors the two-sided nature of the
modern digital information environment. While influencers serve a
positive function by restructuring fragmented information into a
consumer-friendly format to enhance search efficiency, the emotional
dependency they foster carries a potential risk of weakening critical
thinking. The powerful influence wielded by those who capture
consumer trust and attention is triggering a structural paradigm shift
in commerce, moving the central axis from the physical distribution
of goods to the process of trust formation, thereby positioning
influencers as key "relational assets." Ultimately, this research raises
new questions regarding consumer sovereignty and protection in this
evolved digital landscape, suggesting that proactive policy
interventions, such as enhancing information transparency, are
essential for the sustainable growth of the ecosystem.
