Modern society is an era in which consumerist lifestyles that place consumption at the center of life have become normalized with the intensification of the capitalist economic system. Consumption is no longer limited to the simple acquisition or use of material goods but has transitioned into a cultural and symbolic act reflecting individual identity, self-realization, social status, and ethical beliefs. However, this consumption-centered society simultaneously entails various paradoxical problems such as overconsumption, environmental destruction, resource depletion, and deepening social inequality. Particularly, after experiencing severe climate crises and economic inequality, critical reflection on consumption and social interest in new consumption patterns have rapidly expanded. In this temporal context, 'consumption restraint,' which voluntarily reduces consumption, is gaining attention beyond the category of mere consumption suppression or ascetic behavior, in dimensions such as ethical values, identity expression, and practice of social responsibility.
Existing studies on consumption restraint have generally focused on self-control as impulse suppression or saving behavior, or individually examined specific practice forms such as boycotts, minimalism, and voluntary simplicity. However, this approach regards consumption restraint as a temporary response or lifestyle, failing to sufficiently explain the complex interplay of emotions, values, and self-regulation strategies inherent in its formation process. Accordingly, this study re-conceptualizes consumption restraint as an autonomous practice will to regain control over life and aims to comprehensively explore the structure of consumption restraint and its formation and outcome mechanisms. In particular, the study adopts a mixed-methods design combining qualitative exploration and quantitative verification to derive the core concepts constituting consumption restraint, capture the emotional and cognitive motivations for restraint, and empirically verify the structural relationships among related variables.
In the first stage of the study, a grounded theory approach was used to explore the process by which consumers practice consumption restraint and its types. To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 consumers in their 20s and 30s, and analysis followed the procedures of Strauss and Corbin (1998): open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. Open coding resulted in 50 concepts and 19 subcategories, and axial coding constructed a paradigm model. The paradigm model was organized as follows.
The causal conditions include 'consumption guilt' and 'consumer pride' as moral emotions, and the contextual conditions involve value-oriented factors such as 'degrowthism' and 'post-materialism.' The central phenomenon was set as 'consumption restraint,' divided into three practice forms: 'purchase restraint,' 'use restraint,' and 'disposal restraint.' The intervening conditions in this process include 'other-oriented tendency' and 'saving tendency' as interaction strategies, with 'self-persuasion' operating, and the outcome is an increase in 'consumer autonomy.' The core category derived through this analysis is 'self-persuasive practice of consumption restraint for regaining control over life,' implying a self-directed process where consumers reconfigure consumption reflecting their own emotions and values.
In particular, in the selective coding stage, four consumer types were classified based on the relationships among the paradigm elements: first, 'purification response type' pursues moral purification by reducing consumption to alleviate guilt, showing high practice levels but low self-persuasion. They mainly focus on suppressing new consumption and are passive in utilizing or disposing of already owned resources. Their consumption restraint is close to 'reflection' and is a practice of self-purification to resolve discomfort from consumption not aligning with internal moral standards. This type has awareness of degrowthism but lacks internal conviction for post-materialistic life, and focuses on temporary emotional resolution rather than reconfiguring self-identity through consumption. Nevertheless, attempts to form consumer autonomy through self-persuasion triggered by the stimulus of guilt are partially observed, showing the potential for transition to autonomous consumption practice in the future.
Second, 'obligation persistence type' practices consumption restraint long-term with consumption guilt and economic efficiency as core motivations. They internalize 'not consuming' as a lifestyle norm, and form restraint strategies to preemptively block new consumption through repeated experiences of emotional discomfort. However, they are analyzed as other-directed habits based on emotion avoidance and loss avoidance rather than autonomous selection based on self-belief or value internalization. They sympathize with post-materialism but show limitations in their consumption values or lifestyle. Purchase restraint tendency is strong, but practice in use restraint or disposal restraint is weak, and self-persuasion strategy is limited. Therefore, while restraint appears to persist externally, it is an unstable type in terms of the core category of regaining control over life.
Third, 'value-oriented type' recognizes consumption restraint as a lifestyle consistent with the values they pursue and performs autonomous practice by linking emotional motivation with self-identity reinforcement. They have high self-confidence based on consumer pride and practice consistent restraint throughout the process of purchase, use, and disposal. Consumption is not merely a target of suppression but a choice to regain control over life, through which self-expression and autonomy are simultaneously strengthened. They show high internal acceptance of both degrowthism and post-materialism and function as active agents connecting environmental·social values with the meaning of individual life through restraint. Self-persuasion strategy also operates clearly, forming a virtuous cycle where restraint practice transitions to self-reflection and moral satisfaction. This type is the most typical case matching the core category, showing high levels of consumer autonomy through self-persuasive practice of consumption restraint.
Fourth, 'conformity restraint type' practices restraint passively in response to external environmental changes or economic constraints. They experience consumer pride to some extent but self-persuasion strategy or value internalization hardly appears. Restraint is merely a temporary response to external factors and is not connected to internalized norms or identity formation. They have weak recognition of degrowthism or post-materialism and perform consumption restraint as part of a survival strategy. Saving tendency is strong but strategic practice based on self-regulation plans or self-understanding is insufficient. Therefore, this type is interpreted as a state that repeats limited choices by environmental constraints rather than gaining autonomy through consumption restraint.
In the second stage of the study, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were sequentially conducted to confirm the structure of the consumption restraint concept prior to structural equation model analysis. This is a procedure to examine whether the three practice forms of consumption restraint (purchase restraint, use restraint, disposal restraint) derived from qualitative research operate as distinguishable factors in the measurement structure and reflect them in the measurement model of structural equation modeling.
To this end, exploratory factor analysis was conducted, and the results showed that the items constituting consumption restraint tended to be structured into three clearly distinguishable factors. Each factor consisted of items reflecting the unique aspects of consumption restraint, and the individual factors were distinguishable while having conceptually meaningful associations. In particular, the first factor was formed around practices of delaying or restraining purchases, the second factor around behaviors of intentionally reducing usage or controlling overconsumption, and the third factor around attitudes of circulating or properly disposing of unnecessary items. This factor structure provided a theoretical foundation for understanding consumption restraint not as an action at a specific point but as a practice across the entire consumption process.
Subsequently, confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to examine whether this three subfactor structure is statistically valid. The analysis results showed that it is appropriate to explain consumption restraint not as a single dimension but as a multidimensional structure where self-regulatory practices at each stage of purchase, use, and disposal exist independently yet organically connected. Each subfactor maintained a stable relationship with items matching the theoretical concept, and the three factors were distinguishable while sharing a common foundation of the overall restraint tendency to autonomously reconfigure consumption. This analysis is a result showing that the practice methods of consumption restraint revealed in qualitative research form empirically distinguishable subdimensions, providing a valid basis for setting these subfactors as independent latent variables in the subsequent structural equation model and analyzing their paths.
Based on the confirmation of this factor structure, a structural equation model was set and analyzed. In this analysis, the influence of the moral emotion factors consumption guilt and consumer pride on the subdimensions of consumption restraint (purchase restraint, use restraint, disposal restraint) was examined, and how these consumption restraint practices ultimately affect consumer autonomy was verified.
The model analysis results showed that consumer pride had a significant positive influence on all three subdimensions of consumption restraint. In particular, use restraint and disposal restraint showed a higher explanatory power than purchase restraint in the relationship with consumer autonomy. This shows that practices of planning the use of already owned resources and reconstructing the relationship with items are actions that substantially contribute to consumers' sense of self-regulation and autonomy perception. Restraint practice ultimately implies a psychological mechanism that enhances autonomy and self-efficacy through the experience of consumers being able to design and control their lives more actively.
These results provide several important implications in the theoretical aspect. First, this study structured consumption restraint into three subdimensions of purchase restraint, use restraint, and disposal restraint, thereby redefining consumption restraint not as a single suppression behavior but as a multidimensional consumption restraint practice concept. Existing literature tended to reduce consumption restraint to behaviors of expenditure reduction or impulse suppression, but this study conceptualized autonomous restraint practices across the entire process of consumption before (purchase restraint), during consumption (use restraint), and after consumption (disposal restraint). This is a theoretical contribution that expands consumption restraint to a practice concept where consumers' self-regulation abilities are integrated.
Second, this study secured the generalizability of the results of grounded theory-based qualitative research by quantitatively verifying the restraint concept and components derived from qualitative exploration through a structural equation model. The three subdimensions of consumption restraint formed a statistically significant factor structure through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and the path model constructed based on these explained the relationship between moral emotions and consumer autonomy significantly. This demonstrates the effectiveness and validity of the mixed-methods design and serves as a methodological case for integrated emotion-cognition theory model construction.
Third, this study presented a new application possibility for self-regulation theory based on emotions by integrally connecting the concepts of moral emotion and self-regulation, which were individually dealt with in consumer behavior theory, and empirically verifying their structural paths. In particular, it provided a theoretical basis for interpreting consumption restraint not as restraint or avoidance but as an expression of positive identity by showing that consumer pride has a significant influence across all subdimensions of consumption restraint. This structure allows understanding consumption restraint as a practical manifestation of value-based identity.
These research results provide practical implications for promoting consumption restraint practice. This study empirically confirmed that consumer pride functions as a core motivator for consumption restraint practice and substantially contributes to the improvement of self-efficacy and autonomy perception. On the other hand, consumption guilt showed a significant influence only on use restraint, suggesting that negative emotions can act as motivation triggers in specific contexts but have limitations in driving sustainable restraint practice. These results suggest that differentiated intervention strategies are needed depending on the characteristics of emotions when considering consumer emotions as drivers of restraint practice.
In particular, the fact that use restraint and disposal restraint had a stronger influence on consumer autonomy than purchase restraint shows the practical meaning that consumption restraint is a self-directed strategy that reconstructs the entire consumption process beyond simply suppressing consumption. This implies that consumption restraint is effective as a reconfiguration of consumption meaning rather than expenditure suppression in modern society where consumption is directly linked to identity, suggesting a practical direction for creating sustainable consumption culture.
Along with this, policy and educational suggestions can also be derived. From a policy perspective, consumer policy should shift from simple recommendations for consumption reduction to a direction that strengthens consumers' self-determination and autonomy. For example, the creation of social infrastructure that encourages post-consumption restraint practices such as reuse, sharing, and repair, along with the establishment of cultural and institutional foundations so that restraint practice can be connected to consumer identity, is necessary. Public campaigns also require a shift from 'prohibition'-centered to 'expression'-centered approaches, and self-narrative messages may be effective.
From an educational perspective, the development and introduction of consumer education programs that can cultivate emotion-based self-regulation abilities is needed. In particular, learning approaches that induce and internalize consumer pride are effective in enhancing the sustainability of restraint, and expanded in-depth consumer education from information delivery-centered to emotion reinterpretation, experience reflection, and self-identity linkage is required. In addition, the development of customized content considering age and income levels, along with the introduction of participation-based consumption restraint training programs utilizing peer group influence in the case of adolescents, can be a highly effective strategy.
Meanwhile, this study has several limitations. First, the purchase restraint factor was measured with two items, limiting the construct validity aspect. Future research needs sophisticated item development that reflects various strategies such as avoidance of impulsive consumption, excessive consumption, and unplanned consumption. This will contribute to more clearly distinguishing the detailed aspects of restraint practice and measuring the qualitative level of restraint.
In addition, this study was conducted based on a sample centered on the 2030 generation, so there is a limitation in confirming the differences in consumption restraint perception and practice methods between generations. In the future, comparative analysis of motivation, strategy, and emotional response differences in consumption restraint for various age groups such as middle-aged, elderly, and adolescent groups will secure basic data for customized education and policy design.
Finally, this study suggests an attempt to expand the differences between consumer types derived from qualitative research through subsequent quantitative research. In particular, verifying how the path structures of emotional influence, restraint strategy, and autonomy perception differ by type classified as purification response type, obligation persistence type, value-oriented type, and conformity restraint type in follow-up research will provide substantial evidence for customized consumer intervention strategy establishment.
In conclusion, this study conceptualizes consumption restraint as an emotion·value·strategy integrated practice and presents theoretical consistency and policy practicality by multidimensional structuring it. Consumption is no longer a simple act but a means of designing 'the direction of life,' and restraint is a subjective attitude to reflect and practice that direction, which this study empirically supports.
