This study empirically investigates how social media users’ attitudes toward sports influencers affect their intentions to participate in physical activity and to purchase recommended products. In response to the growing influence of digital media and the central role of influencers in shaping consumer behavior, this research aims to provide both theoretical contributions and practical implications for the development of strategic approaches in contemporary sports marketing. Specifically, the study examines how influencer-related factors—namely trustworthiness, expertise, and attractiveness—as well as user-related factors—such as perceived similarity and parasocial interaction—affect the formation of user attitudes toward sports influencers. These attitudes are then analyzed as mediators influencing behavioral intentions, including exercise participation and product purchase, through the application of a structural equation modeling (SEM) framework. The results indicate that both expertise and attractiveness have statistacally significant effects on users’ attitudes toward sports influencers. These findings align with Ohanian’s (1990) Source Credibility Model, suggesting that sports influencers are perceived not only as content creators but also as credible experts and attractive role models, thereby shaping users’ cognitive and affective evaluations. In contrast, trustworthiness did not exhibit a statistically significant direct effect on attitude formation. However, this result appears to be attributed to multicollinearity between trustworthiness and expertise, indicating potential redundancy in their explanatory power. In this context, trustworthiness may still be a relevant construct, but its independent contribution was likely attenuated by the overlapping variance shared with expertise. With regard to user-related variables, both perceived similarity and parasocial interaction emerged as significant predictors of attitude toward sports influencers. Perceived similarity, grounded in Social Identity Theory, was shown to foster emotional alignment and identification with the influencer, thus facilitating positive attitude formation. Parasocial interaction also demonstrated a strong influence, as it reflects a one-sided yet meaningful sense of intimacy and connectedness with media figures, enhancing the user’s psychological engagement and affective receptivity. Furthermore, attitude toward the sports influencer was found to significantly influence both exercise intention and purchase intention. This finding supports the structure proposed by the Dual Mediation Hypothesis (MacKenzie et al., 1986), reinforcing the notion that user attitudes toward digital content serve as pivotal mediators between persuasive messaging and behavioral intention. Notably, exercise intention was also found to exert a direct and significant influence on purchase intention, suggesting that influencer content not only motivates health-related behaviors but also prompts related consumer activity, particularly in relation to fitness and sports products. Taken together, this study offers a comprehensive model that captures both the antecedents of attitude formation and the subsequent behavioral responses among followers of sports influencers. Unlike previous research that primarily focused on brand attitudes or commercial behaviors, this study expands the discourse by including non-commercial outcomes such as exercise participation. This highlights the dual role of sports influencers in promoting both physical activity and consumption, positioning them as socially impactful figures in the digital media environment. Practically, the findings suggest that marketers and organizations should consider not only the popularity of an influencer but also the emotional and cognitive connections they foster with followers. Strategies that emphasize content authenticity, professional credibility, and aesthetic appeal—while simultaneously strengthening user identification and parasocial engagement—are likely to enhance the effectiveness of influencer-driven marketing. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that sports influencers, when strategically aligned with follower expectations, can contribute to both short-term promotional outcomes and the long-term cultivation of health-conscious lifestyles and brand loyalty.
