Art is both familiar and unfamiliar. While it is often said that anyone can enjoy art, it remains an unfamiliar and challenging experience for many people. As art has been formalized as a subject in current education settings, prescribed methods of expression and correct answers have been repeatedly imposed in classes. A result-oriented approach to art education limits students’ ability to feel and interpret through art, leading them to see art as just a form of standardized reproduction. However, recent trends in art education are shifting toward emphasizing individual experience and interpretation, allowing students to practice art naturally in their lives by focusing on questions such as “What is the relationship between art and education?” and “How can that relationship be reimagined beyond traditional art education?” In line with these trends, this study aimed to explore the expanded meaning and potential of art education based on participants’ experiences in an artist studio program.
This research originated from movements in the field. The researcher participated in various artist studio programs as a creative producer rather than a researcher, repeatedly observing participants’ responses, movements, and sensory changes throughout these programs. Participants were found to observe the artists’ works, explore materials, and make sense of the spaces at their own pace, even without any directions or guidelines. These observations led to a new educational possibility. Education within an artist’s studio led to learning without teaching, a form of latent learning requiring no oral explanation. This phenomenon became the starting point of this research, allowing the researcher to explore this issue from a researcher’s perspective. By focusing on the educational moments that emerge within the artistic space of an artist’s studio, this study sought to establish a new connection between art and education.
Accordingly, this research was a phenomenological case study aimed at analyzing the experiences of artist studio program participants in detail and examining the educational significance of these experiences. Using Husserl’s phenomenological theory, this study sought to suspend pre-understandings or judgment from the researcher’s perspective and adopt an open attitude toward the participants’ experiences. When experiencing, enquiring, and examining, this study aimed to approach the experiences with “intuition of essence based on free variation,” rather than being limited by specific boundaries, categories, or established regulations or theories. Of the artist studio programs observed from August 2022 to February 2025, three participants and six different artist studios were selected for field research based on a criterion-based method. Each studio was unique in its form, differing by the artist’s disposition and work style, and the activities within the studios also varied. Chapter III describes the activities and contexts of the artist studio programs as they are, and Chapter IV analyzes the different aspects of art education provided through these programs. The significance of artist studio programs in art education is discussed in Chapter V.
The significance of artist studio programs in art education was as follows. First, encountering the artists’ work environments naturally sparks curiosity and inspiration among participants. Second, artist studio programs focus on exploration, experimentation, failure, and reconfiguration, an intrinsic process in an artist’s creative activity, allowing participants to experience the artistic mindset and creative activities firsthand. Third, participants learn about current art trends by interacting with artists, gaining a deeper understanding of the significance of art “here and now.” Fourth, since studios are an extension of everyday life, participants come to see art as a culture practiced in daily life. Fifth, rather than unilaterally accepting the artists’ explanations or instructions, participants develop their own interpretations and insights based on personal experiences and thoughts.
Art and education today are full of potential, existing in a relationship of coexistence, interaction, intersection, and integration. Through sensations, art helps people understand and reshape themselves and the world, while education provides the context and environment so that the inherent values in art can be practiced in life and society. By exploring new perspectives in art education at the intersection of art and learning, this research demonstrated how art education can evolve into more flexible and practical educational spaces. Artist studios, in particular, serve as places where art and education come together closely, offering learners complex learning opportunities where sensation, interpretation, relationships, and communication intersect. As part of the efforts to complement and transcend traditional institutionalized art education, this research aimed to highlight the role of artist studios as new domains for art learning and to provide practical insights into diversifying spaces, increasing agent flexibility, and opening up practices in art education.
The artist studio programs were a place of practice that went beyond alternative art education and questioned the nature of art education within the relationship between art and education. In particular, they demonstrated how art education should not be confined to a single framework but embedded within layered structures and contexts where different spaces, agents, sensations, and practices intersect. Art should be approachable to everyone. Education should act as an open gateway that connects to art. In the artist studios, participants became active interpreters and experienced organic, contextual learning through the artists, as well as the space, materials, atmosphere, and interactions with others. The artist studio programs have the potential to become an educational turning point where life experiences and artistic practices come together. They offer a new outlook for the future of art education and suggest that art education can, once again, evolve into a participatory practice that remains a vital part of everyday life.
