The purpose of this thesis is to provide in-depth understanding of the life and prose of scholar-official Jeuk Ji-heon (則止軒) Yu Eon-ho (兪彦鎬, 1730~1796), whose literary capabilities have been overshadowed by the eminence of his stature as a government official. In particular, it focuses on the cheongryu euisik (‘purist consciousness’) at the crux of his identity by first examining the meaning of the concept then investigating how it was manifested through chulsa (the act of entering government service) and eungeo (withdrawal from public life).
‘Purist consciousness’ is a concept encompassing the practice consciousness of political factions that pursued the critical discourse of cheongui - criticism of the influence of the king’s in-laws and eunuch officials over royal authority and loss of royal moral integrity – and self-awareness based on that consciousness. Yu Eon-ho’s purist consciousness was manifested through practices and introspection grounded in the cheongui of the purist group of the Noron faction, which emphasized political uprightness and moral integrity as central tenets. To uncover the relationship between this consciousness and Yu Eon-ho’s prose compositions, this thesis analyses how Yu Eon-ho’s purist consciousness was manifested through political action during times of government service and through self-reflection and self-understanding during periods of withdrawal from public life. His purist consciousness can be understood as the standard and driving force behind determining whether to enter government service or retreat from it.
After outlining the purpose and method of this paper in Chapter I, Chapter II empirically investigates Yu Eon-ho’s life and relationships. First, it closely examines his family background and the individuals who had a significant impact on his formative years, which shaped his identity as a Noron purist. Then, it analyses the trajectory of his career by dividing it into three stages based on major biographical and political turning points. In particular, this study focuses on the reality of his political involvement in different time periods by evaluating records of his official appointments and the degree to which he fulfilled his public duties. This is followed by an in-depth evaluation of the second phase of his career, his time of seclusion in Anseong (安城), which has received relatively little scholarly attention compared to his time in public office.
Chapter III of this thesis organizes Yu Eon-ho’s extant writings prior to a full analysis of his prose works. First, it identifies the structural and textual characteristics of the primary sources used in this study – Yeonseok (燕石), Yeonseok Seungyugi (燕石勝遊記), and Imgeosagyeol (林居四訣) - and provides an overview of other writings such as Yeonhaengnok (燕行錄) and Gwigyeollok (歸潔錄). Then, it closely investigates their periods of composition and the traits and characteristics of his prose according to the time of composition. On this basis, it determines that his prose works can be broadly divided into those written during his time in government service and those written during periods of reclusion, forming the groundwork of the in-depth analysis of his works in Chapters IV and V.
Chapter IV focuses on Yu Eon-ho’s terms of service in government from the late years of King Yeongjo’s reign to the later years of King Jeongjo’s rule, exploring his political activities as a member of the Noron purist faction and the related stylistic features of his prose works. It shows that in the early phase of his public career under King Yeongjo he expressed his views on entering and withdrawing from office based on the belief he held in the Confucian ideal of loyalty between monarch and subject under the influence of senior Noron mentors. The study goes on to analyse his prose work Gongamgi (恭庵記) in this political context. Next, the chapter turns to Yu Eon-ho’s series of writings on the topic of Dongwon ajip (東園雅集) (a gathering of Joseon-era literati (yangban scholars and officials) held in Dongwon) as well as his writings on the theme of friendship (udo, 友道), examining the embodiment of the Noron purist consciousness through the recurring ajip motif. In doing so, by focusing on Yu Eon-ho’s role in documenting the gatherings in Dongwon, this study highlights his effort to build up solidarity with like-minded literati, who upheld moral integrity without compromising with prevailing trends, as a political symbol. The thesis also finds that Park Ji-won and Yi Bo-cheom’s experiences of friendship, through which they embodied mushim (indifference or detachment) and murayangmang (the dissolution of self and object) - experiences that allowed them to grasp the essence of companionship - served as literary motifs that symbolically embodied the aesthetic ideals of the Noron purist faction on a socio-ethical level. Furthermore, through the illustration of excessive drinking practices, Yu Eon-ho sought to give literary form to the purist consciousness through the ajip (gathering of scholars and cultural elites) motif.
This is followed by an analysis of how Yu Eon-ho, as part of his practice of purist consciousness during the reign of King Jeongjo, supported the legitimacy of Jeongjo’s Myeonguirok and contributed to strengthening its ideological framework through his prose compositions. Chapter IV ends by demonstrating that Yu Eon-ho unwaveringly upheld his moral values as a Noron purist scholar even in his later years.
Chapter V examines Yu Eon-ho’s reflection on his purist consciousness through the study of the writings he composed during times of reclusion. First, it studies his aesthetic attitude toward natural landscapes early in his official career, revealing how they inspired the personal sentiments and inclinations underlying his purist consciousness. The pure and refreshing imagery embodied in his landscape-themed works served as an aesthetic representation of his views on official duty and life and contributed to the construction of a morally upright image befitting a Noron purist scholar. The next part of the chapter focuses on the prose writings he composed during his exile in the final years of King Yeongjo’s reign, paying particular attention to Yu Eon-ho’s reflections on his life as a Noron purist faction member with a synthetic understanding of Confucian and Daoist ideologies amid political adversities. In particular, this study reveals that Zhuangzi (莊子), which he read intensively during his time in exile, served as a philosophical foundation for this integrative outlook. Chapter V concludes with a study of Yu Eon-ho’s later writings from the period when he compiled Gwigyeollok and Imgeosagyeol. It identifies that from this point on, he maintained his ideals as a purist Noron faction member while distancing himself from practical politics and pursuing a reclusive life. Especially notable is how, through deep reflection on the scholar-officials’ dilemma between ‘appointment’ (chulcheo, 出處) and ‘attainment’ (dal, 達), he sought to embody a way of life defined by sugyeongimjin (隨境任眞; “responding to circumstances with sincerity and authenticity”). His attitude was shaped by personal events such as the loss of his wife and his experiences during a diplomatic mission to Beijing, which led him to question the universalist notion of dal as a state of transcendence. Instead, he arrived at the mindset of confronting one’s reality with sincere and honest emotions. He considered this to be the essence of his purist beliefs.
Based on the preceding analysis, Chapter VI examines the significance of Yu Eon-ho’s literature as an example of Noron purist literature by comparing it with the works of contemporary Noron literati Kim Jong-su. These figures from the same political faction also upheld a purist consciousness and continuously reflected on the issues of entering government service and retiring from public life, expressing these reflections through literature. However, Kim Jong-su ultimately used the ideal of reclusion as a means to reinforce their political image as Noron purists while continuing active involvement in political affairs. In contrast, Yu Eon-ho sought to justify his life through reclusion grounded in the real practice of gradually distancing himself from power and deep introspection on human existence and life. The literary expressions of entering government service and reclusion in Yu Eon-ho’s works, rooted in a strong self-awareness as a Noron purist, represent a model of Noron purist literature, and it is in this respect that they deserve recognition for their literary-historical significance.
