자동기술법을 응용한 그림책 일러스트레이션 연구 : 죽음의 시각화를 중심으로 = A Study on Picture Book Illustration Using Automatism:Focusing on the Visualization of Death

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 초현실주의 예술 기법인 자동기술법(automatism)을 활용하여 죽음과 사후세계라는 추상적인 주제를 그림책 일러스트레이션으로 시각화하는 방법을 탐구한다. 죽음의 개념과 동서양 문화권의 죽음에 대한 시각적 상징을 고찰한 후, 기존 그림책에서 사용된 죽음 표현 방식을 의인화, 개인적 감정, 사후세계, 애도의 네 가지 범주로 분류하였다. 그 중에서 사후세계의 표현에 중점을 두어 작업을 진행하였다.

그림책의 서사는 꿈이라는 장면을 매개로 사후세계에서 죽은 이를 만나는 이야기를 중심으로 전개하였다. 이를 시각적으로 구현하기 위해 구상적 일러스트레이션과 자동기술법을 활용하였다. 현실 세계는 구체적이고 친숙한 이미지로 표현하고, 사후세계는 무의식의 흐름에 기반한 추상적인 이미지로 시각화하였다. 서사의 전환점과 결말에서는 두 표현 방식을 결합하여 경계가 흐려지는 장면을 연출하였다.

자동기술법은 의식의 개입을 최소화하여 상상 밖의 무의식 형상을 유도하는 기법으로, 이는 비현실적인 사후세계를 전달하는 데 있어서 표현 가능성을 넓힌다. 본 작업에서는 시든 나뭇잎을 매개체로 죽음의 상징이자 드로잉 도구로 활용하여 무의식 드로잉을 진행하였고, 생성된 이미지에서 글을 도출하여 이야기를 전개하였다. 이러한 시도는 기존 그림책과 차별화되는 접근으로 열린 서사 구조와 창작 방식에 유연성을 실험하는 데 활용되었다.

본 연구는 자동기술법을 그림책 일러스트레이션에 적용함으로써 죽음을 새로운 시각 언어로 탐구하고자 한 시도로, 이를 통해 그림책의 예술적 표현 가능성을 확장하고 비선형 서사 구조의 실험적 가능성을 제안한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explores ways to visualize the abstract themes of death and the afterlife in picture book illustrations by employing the surrealist art technique of automatism. After examining the concept of death and the visual symbols related to it in Eastern and Western cultures, the study categorizes existing representations of death in picture books into four types: personification, personal emotion, the afterlife, and mourning. Among these, this research focuses primarily on illustrating the afterlife.

The narrative of the picture book centers around a dream sequence in which the protagonist encounters a deceased loved one in the afterlife, offering comfort and insight. To visually express this, the study combines representational illustrations with automatism-based drawings. The real world is depicted with concrete and familiar images, while the afterlife is portrayed through abstract forms derived from the unconscious flow. In the turning points and final scenes, the two styles are merged to blur the boundary between reality and the afterlife.

Automatism, which minimizes conscious intervention to evoke unexpected unconscious imagery, expands the possibilities for representing the unreal and intangible nature of the afterlife. In this work, withered leaves are used both as a symbolic medium of death and as drawing tools for creating unconscious images, from which textual narratives are derived and developed. This experimental approach offers a differentiated strategy compared to traditional picture books, allowing for an open-ended narrative structure and greater creative flexibility.

Ultimately, this study aims to reinterpret and visualize death through the application of automatism to picture book illustration. It proposes new artistic possibilities for depicting death and introduces an alternative, nonlinear narrative approach that expands the expressive potential of picture books.
