This study empirically investigates the emerging phenomenon of “political fandom” in South Korea by analyzing how the level of political participation among fandom members influences their affective organizational commitment, and whether trust in government moderates this relationship. Grounded in Social Identity Theory, the study conceptualizes political fandom as an informal, non-institutional form of civic engagement and examines its implications for democratic governance.
Survey data were collected from two major fandom groups representing progressive and conservative political orientations—188 supporters of Lee Jae-myung and 197 supporters of Han Dong-hoon. The analysis demonstrates that political participation significantly enhances affective commitment within both groups. These findings indicate that political fandoms function not merely as emotionally supportive communities, but as action-oriented collectives characterized by strong in-group identification and voluntary engagement.
Interestingly, trust in government did not show a moderating effect in either group. Despite their presumed affinity with the current administration, Han Dong-hoon supporters’ affective commitment was independent of government trust, suggesting that political fandom is psychologically structured around individual politicians rather than institutional affiliation. This underscores the unique emotional dynamics of fandom-based political identity, where even politicians from the same party may be seen as out-group members if they fall outside the fandom’s core identification.
The study also reveals structural divergence between fandoms: while Lee Jae-myung supporters formed a collectivist, norm-based community emphasizing group-level action and cohesion, Han Dong-hoon supporters exhibited more individualized, symbolically-oriented engagement. These variations highlight the need to treat political fandoms not as monolithic entities but as diverse, stratified communities with distinct emotional and participatory profiles.
From a public administration perspective, the findings call attention to political fandoms as emerging non-institutional actors that may influence policy discourse and civic mobilization. They also challenge conventional models of citizen engagement by showing that administrative trust factors like trust in government may play a limited role in shaping emotional loyalty among such groups. Future governance strategies should account for the emotional structure and motivational heterogeneity of political fandoms when designing participatory mechanisms and public communication frameworks.
