This study aims to analyze the difficulties Chinese learners face in acquiring Korean fictive motion expressions and to propose effective pedagogical methods. Fictive motion expressions are linguistic phenomena in which motion verbs are used to dynamically describe static objects or spatial configurations without any actual physical movement. These expressions are widely used in everyday language, yet Chinese learners often struggle to comprehend and produce them due to cognitive and structural differences between their native language and Korean.
The study first provides a systematic conceptual analysis of fictive motion, including distinctions between actual and fictive motion, its relationship with metaphorical motion, and its interaction with figurative language. Talmy’s motion event frame theory is then applied to examine the typological characteristics of motion events and cross-linguistic expression types, with a particular focus on identifying the cognitive features of Korean fictive motion expressions. Furthermore, based on Langacker’s theory of cognitive grammar, the study analyzes Korean fictive motion expressions in terms of subjectification, perspective, and scanning methods, thereby elucidating how Gestalt recognition and spatial experience are linguistically implemented.
To empirically investigate Chinese learners’ comprehension and production of Korean fictive motion expressions, comprehension and production tests were conducted with Chinese learners grouped by proficiency level, alongside a control group of Korean native speakers. The analysis revealed significant differences in learners’ comprehension and production depending on variables such as grade level, expression type, scanning method, and involved cognitive elements. While both comprehension and production abilities improved with proficiency, the improvement in comprehension was more pronounced. Learners particularly struggled with expressions employing summary scanning and those involving complex cognitive features such as path, directionality, and viewpoint. Error analysis indicated that native language interference, complexity of the target language, lack of instructional input, and cognitive disparities were the primary sources of difficulty. Among these, L1 interference—rooted in systemic differences between Korean and Chinese fictive motion expressions—was the most prominent factor.
Based on these findings, the study proposes a pedagogical framework for teaching Korean fictive motion expressions to Chinese learners. Educational objectives are organized into three progressive stages: cognitive understanding, linguistic awareness, and practical application. Instructional content is structured hierarchically, taking into account expression frequency and cognitive difficulty.
An integrated instructional model rooted in cognitive linguistic theory is proposed, including strategies such as combining explicit and implicit instruction, employing visual and experiential learning tools, and enhancing metacognitive awareness through contrastive analysis. This study is significant in that it not only offers a comprehensive cognitive linguistic analysis of Korean fictive motion expressions, but also empirically documents Chinese learners’ acquisition patterns and translates these findings into pedagogically actionable methods.
