This study explores the educational potential of simplified sketch maps as an effective visual learning tool to enhance middle school students’ locational knowledge. Traditionally, location learning has been perceived as rote memorization, making it difficult to implement systematic, map-based lessons. Moreover, existing curricula and textbooks often lack concrete instructional strategies and visual materials. Particularly at the middle school level, there is a notable lack of research on the development of practical, cognitively appropriate map resources and instructional models.
To address this gap, the study developed a simplified sketch map designed to reduce learners’ cognitive load, based on the achievement standards of the 2022 revised middle school social studies curriculum. A corresponding instructional plan was then designed and the educational effectiveness of the tool was empirically verified.
First, in the map development stage, five different social studies textbooks and the national curriculum were analyzed to select appropriate African countries aligned with the learning objectives. Using map generalization techniques, a simplified sketch map focusing on essential information was created. The map employed a latitude-longitude grid and geometric simplification to reduce visual complexity and enhance learners’ comprehension and expressive ability.
Second, in the lesson design stage, a three-session instructional unit was developed using the simplified sketch map. The lessons were based on the 2022 curriculum’s achievement standards and guided students to organize geographic information using visual cues and memory anchors, apply concepts of absolute and relative location to real-world contexts, and integrate their understanding of geographic concepts.
Third, in the effectiveness analysis stage, an experimental group (using the simplified map) and a control group (using a blank map) were formed. Both groups participated in lessons with identical learning goals and activities. Pre- and post-tests were administered to assess changes in locational knowledge. Results showed that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in absolute location (items 1–2), relative location (item 1), and structured location knowledge (items 1–4). This indicates that simplified sketch maps effectively reduce cognitive load, support structural understanding of location information, and facilitate connections among geographic attributes.
This study developed a simplified sketch map for middle school location learning and empirically validated its effectiveness, thereby expanding the scope of secondary geography education research and contributing to the design of curricula that consider the continuity between elementary and secondary education. In particular, by aligning with the regional geography-oriented direction of the 2022 revised curriculum and specifically presenting lessons and tools that reflect the learning objectives of actual textbooks, this study provides practical support for teachers in lesson design and tool development. Additionally, the simplified sketch map, which reduces visual complexity and structures information around key elements, is designed to be easily accessible to a wide range of learners, encouraging participation and potentially contributing to reducing educational disparities.
