This study investigates the meanings ascribed to femininity within regional cultural content, particularly in the context of how localities construct and externally articulate their identities. Focusing on cultural products centered on female characters, the analysis interrogates how regions voluntarily engage in the processes of feminization and othering of their identity within a hierarchical, gendered binary that positions the ‘region’ in opposition to the ‘city’.
To this end, the study adopts a three-stage methodological framework grounded in structuralist anthropological theory, particularly the binary opposition between ‘culture’ and ‘nature’, alongside ‘Barthes’ concept of ideological mythologies(Mythologies) that associate women with nature, and prior research on postmodern tourism economies in the Global South.
First, a survey of public characters from 215 local governments across South Korea was conducted to classify character types and examine the differential distribution between urban and regional areas. The findings reveal that regional areas exhibit a marked tendency to anthropomorphize local specialties or natural environments, suggesting a self-essentializing logic in which the region constructs its identity as untainted ‘nature’ or commodifiable ‘product’.
Second, the study undertakes a semiotic analysis of female characters from three selected regions and the cultural content in which they are embedded. The results indicate that the femininity portrayed converges on archetypal tropes of ‘maternal abundance and compassion’, ‘untouched purity’, and ‘care for the domestic and communal spheres’.
Third, interviews with local residents and visitors were conducted to assess patterns of reception and consumption. Despite exhibiting resistance to the emotionalized and passive representations of femininity embedded in these characters—perceiving them as unreflective of regional realities—consumers nonetheless encounter repetitive reproductions of such traits. The persistent invocation of a desexualized maternal image demonstrates the selective appropriation of conventional gendered signifiers for strategic deployment in regional branding and tourism marketing.
The femininity articulated in regional cultural content operates within a vertically structured nexus that links ‘nature–region–woman’, wherein externally imposed expectations are internalized and mobilized by regions in constructing their self-identity. This strategic appropriation functions not only as a means of differentiation from urban centers but also as an instrument of ‘gendered symbolic consumption’, whereby the codified signs of the feminized Other are leveraged to facilitate the commodification of place.
By engaging with the structuralist dichotomy of ‘culture’ and ‘nature’, this study critically examines the embedded ideologies within regional cultural representations of femininity. It argues that such practices reflect a self-orientalizing tendency analogous to the internalized colonial logics observed in the Global South under postmodern tourism, thereby calling into question the politics of representation and identity construction in contemporary regional discourse.
