국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 한강의 『작별하지 않는다』와 그 책의 영어 번역 We Do Not Part에 드러난 번역의 정치적 가능성을 탐구한다. 이 논문의 관심은 번역가가 무엇을 지향하고, 무엇을 실행하고 있는가를 살피는 해석적·생산적 번역비평이다. 이러한 관점에서『작별하지 않는다』와 We Do Not Part가 각기 다른 방식으로 ‘친밀한 읽기(intimate reading)로서의 번역’을 수행하는 방식을 살핀다. 이때, ‘친밀한 읽기로서의 번역’이란 번역가·창작자가 원본에 대한 존중과 나름의 해석에 기반해 원본에 밀착하여 번f역하는 것을 뜻한다. 이 과정에서 독자는 낯선 언어와 역사로 초대되는 한편, 번역의 매개성을 인식하는 가운데 비판적인 사유의 활동을 할 수 있게 된다.
본론 1장에서는『작별하지 않는다』와 그 책의 영어 번역본 We Do Not Part를 대조 분석하며, 번역가의 전략이 독자의 ‘친밀한 읽기’를 어떻게 유도하는지를 밝히고자 한다. 이때 두 번역가 이예원과 페이지 모리스는 자신들의 ‘친밀한 읽기’를 드러내는 유연한 번역 전략을 통해 독자를 소설 세계 속으로 끌어들이는 동시에, 독자의 매끄러운 독해를 방해한다. 두 번역가는 한강의 시적 문체를 옮기고, 한국어와 한국 문화를 이해할 수 있도록 맥락을 제공해 주면서 독자를 위한 번역을 한다. 이때 독자는 소설에 접근할 수 있게 된다. 동시에, 두 번역가는 낯선 한국어 단어와 개념을 소설에서 아무런 설명 없이 소개함으로써, 독자를 헤매게 만든다. 독자는 낯선 단어가 남긴 의문을 풀고 싶을 때, 글을 더욱 적극적으로 해석하고 정보를 따로 찾게 된다. 이러한 과정을 통해 번역가는 독자의 ‘친밀한 읽기’를 유도한다.
본론 2장에서는 번역의 범주를 역사 번역으로 확장한다. 『작별하지 않는다』 그 자체를 제주 4·3에 대한 역사 번역으로 보고, 한강이 제주 4·3을 친밀하게 읽은 과정과 독자에게 ‘친밀한 읽기’를 유도하는 과정을 살핀다. 이때 한강이 제주 4·3을 소개하는 방식에 초점을 맞춘다. 소설 속에서 제주 4·3에 대한 이야기는 파편적으로 제시된다. 즉, 4·3 역사는 인물의 꿈, 기억, 그리고 공부한 자료에서, 분절된 상태로 나타난다. 한강은 제주 4·3의 파편들을 연결하면서, 역사를 현재로 번역한다. 『작별하지 않는다』의 이야기는 세계 독자를 향해 있다. 소설에서 한강은 제주 4·3이 한국의 중요한 역사적 사건인 동시에, 제국주의에서 비롯된 국가 폭력에서 나온 세계사의 중요한 사건임을 강조한다. 한강은 소설 속에서 이러한 국가 폭력의 피해를 겪은 다른 나라들과 연대 관계를 맺으며, 한국 독자와 더불어 세계 독자에 이야기를 건넨다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis explores the political potential of Han Kang’s Jag-Byeol-Ha-Ji Anh-Neun-Da and its English translation, We Do Not Part. This research takes an analytical and productive approach to translation criticism, investigating what the translators pursue and implement through their work. Using this perspective, this thesis explores how Jag-Byeol-Ha-Ji Anh-Neun-Da and We Do Not Part, in their respective manners, practice intimate reading as translation. Here, intimate reading as translation refers to translation that simultaneously assumes a respect for the source text and acknowledges that translation is an act of interpretation. Through this process, the reader is invited to explore an unfamiliar language and history, while encouraged to critically engage with the text through their cognizance that translation is mediating the information presented.
The first chapter constrastively analyzes Jag-Byeol-Ha-Ji Anh-Neun-Da and We Do Not Part to reveal how the translator’s strategy guides the reader’s intimate reading. E. yaewon and Paige Aniyah Morris use a flexible translation strategy that discloses their own intimate reading. The translators bring the reader into Han Kang’s poetic world while interrupting that reader’s chances for smooth reading. They translate Han Kang’s poetic style, providing context on the Korean language and culture as needed, to help the reader gain access to the text. However, the translators also introduce transliterations of unfamilar Korean concepts and words with no explanation, leaving the reader at a loss. The reader, if they want to understand this unfamiliarity, must actively analyze the text, or search for information outside of the novel. Through this process, the translators encourage the reader’s intimate reading.
The second chapter expands the category of translation to historical translation. It views Jag-Byeol-Ha-Ji Anh-Neun-Da as a translation of Jeju 4·3 in its own right, and explores the intimate reading of Han Kang and how the author incites intimate reading from her readers. The focus here is on how Jeju 4·3 is introduced in fragments in the novel. The history of Jeju 4·3 is presented in parts, through the characters’ dreams, memories, and research materials. Han Kang collects these fragments and connects them to translate Jeju 4·3 into the present. She contextualizes Jeju 4·3 as both an important moment in Korean history and as a global historical event caused by state violence that is rooted in imperialism. Writing to both a Korean and global audience, Han Kang aims to form bonds of solidarity with other victims of state violence.
