This study examines Jean-Luc Nancy’s thinking on the body, community and technique. It argues that Nancy’s ontological body exposes a place of finite existence that comes after the death of the modern subject. Such a bodily existence arrives from the bodies at the limits, which emerge by dismantling the soul-body dualism. Furthermore, the finite body at the limits is always being towards community; the singular ‘I’ is exposed to other plural beings from the outset. Lastly, this study contends that these bodies at the limits arrive with the praxis of writing as a techne of aesthetic existence, traced in the emotion of the sublime.

Nancy seeks to deconstruct the Western-Christian concept of the body – the body proper –, which has been historically shaped by the doctrine of incarnation. To this end, I will analyze how Nancy deconstructs the Western-Christian concept of the body by examining two contrasting biblical scenes related to the body of Jesus: Hoc est enim corpus meum (For this is my body) and Noli me tangere (Do not touch me). The former is a liturgical phrase used in the Eucharist, expressing the desire to see, touch, and eat the body of God and be incorporated into him. This corresponds to the philosophical tradition of dualism between the soul and the body, demonstrating that the concept of the body was formed out of the desire to present something eternal and immortal, such as the soul and God, that cannot be present in the here and now. In contrast, the latter, Noli me tangere, depicts the scene when Jesus, having risen from the dead, forbids Mary Magdalene from touching his body as he ascends to heaven. This phrase is reinterpreted as an existential command to not to cling to the present but to abandon oneself to Jesus’ departing body. According to this interpretation, the body does not emerge as a self-identical subject with its own identity, but as an existential being that constitutes itself in the movement of self-difference as ‘departure’, and presents itself as strange foreign bodies.

In particular, Nancy explains the problem of self-difference by focusing on the fact that the body takes its place of existence within language. For Nancy, the body is not a substantial entity with a foundation of extension, but rather a finite mode of existence that occurs locally at every moment through the linguistic practices of speaking and writing. Here, the body and language are connected in terms of the dislocation of sense. Just as the body emerges in transgressive practices that interfere with self-identical sense, linguistic practices such as speaking and writing do not serve as transparent means of conveying and inscribing specific meanings; rather, they create new spaces of sense by slipping away from those meanings. Nancy terms these linguistic practices and finite modes of existence as ‘ex-scription’, which create spaces for the proliferation of meaning at the limits of sense.

Exscription of bodies and writing presupposes the existence of (the relationship with) the other, as they both emerge from a relationship that exceeds the self. Thus, exscription is always an experience of being toward the community. For Nancy, community does not refer to a specific group or political entity united for a particular purpose in the real world. Rather, it refers to a situation of com-pearance, in which the self and the non-self are exposed to each other and exist together. The singular ‘I’ emerges only within the we relationship, where the ‘I’ and the ‘other’ coexist, as articulated in Nancy’s terms of being-in-common and being singular plural. In other words, for the singular ‘I’ to exist, it must be exposed to external beings that exceed the self – that is, to plural beings – and without a relationship with plural beings that interrupts the propre ‘I’, the limits of the singular ‘I’ cannot be delimited.

The body’s vulnerability and exposure to the outside world as a finite existence is also empirically evident. Nancy analyzes how bodies are created and multiplied within technological conditions, and how they are linked to other bodies within an infinite network of relationships, where origin and purpose, cause and effect, are not easily distinguishable. However, this does not imply that finite bodies are unilaterally limited and determined by technology. In our situation where technology has become nature, Nancy seeks the possibility of creating a space within technology itself to escape from the external conditions surrounding the body without being completely dependent on them. In other words, he emphasizes the praxis of transforming and recreating oneself and one’s relationships through the technique of existence – the techne of bodies – which exists outside the schema of purpose and (re)production. This inoperative praxis involves exposing all beings that cannot be named, and therefore cannot come into being within the existing order of meaning, through the exscription of writing, and being with them.

Finally, this study suggests that the techne of bodies can be captured in the aesthetic experience of the sublime, seeking to elucidate the possibility of finite existence from the perspective of the aesthetic creation of the self. On the one hand, when the sublime is introduced in order to think outside of the classical definition of beauty, it appears as a movement at the limits that disrupts and syncopates the meaning and boundaries of beauty as its internal limit. On the other hand, when the sublime is defined as the sentiment of the subject being suspended in an encounter with the infinite, which exceeds its own limits, this emotion can be reinterpreted as a possibility for re-creation and transformation, which resets the relationship between the self and the outside world. Thus, the movement of the sublime parallels the experience of finite existence, in which the techne of bodies occurs at the limits. The post-modern subject that emerges from Nancy's thought – that is, a finite body that exscribes itself, infinitely withdraws from its own proper foundation, and begins anew – can thus be interpreted as an aesthetic existence that arises in the movement of the sublime.
