Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is an analytical technique used to investigate nanoscale surface structures and material properties based on the analysis of interatomic forces. It utilizes a microcantilever tip fabricated via MEMS processes, which approaches the sample surface, enabling the extraction of surface information through the tip's static and dynamic behavior as well as frequency response characteristics. In addition to contact mode, which relies on static deformation of the cantilever, non-contact and tapping modes based on resonance behavior are also widely used. In such dynamic modes, the AFM microcantilever exhibits nonlinear behavior, influencing image resolution and tip-sample interaction forces. Conversely, the nonlinear response of the cantilever can be used to estimate tip-sample interaction forces and properties.
In this study, the nonlinear characteristics of AFM microcantilevers are analyzed through experimental methods, theoretical modeling, and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). First, using a commercial AFM system, force–distance curves between the tip and samples were measured to analyze the nonlinear interaction, and frequency response characteristics were obtained by sweeping the excitation frequency at a fixed tip–sample setpoint. Experiments were conducted using a silicon tip interacting with HOPG (Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite) and PDMS (Polydimethylsiloxane) sample surfaces. The nonlinear frequency response observed was then compared with theoretical simulations based on a combined interaction model consisting of van der Waals forces and contact forces based on DMT and JKR contact model.
POD is a powerful tool for extracting dominant features from complex systems with high degrees of freedom or coupled physical phenomena. Proper Orthogonal Modes (POM), Proper Orthogonal Values (POV), and Proper Orthogonal Coordinates (POC) were extracted and analyzed from POD. The results demonstrated that even low-order POMs can effectively represent the system’s dynamics, providing quantitative agreement with theoretical models. This approach offers potential applications in AFM system design and control, and it can be extended to various experimental conditions (e.g., in-liquid environments or temperature variations) and higher-mode analysis in the future.
