This study aims to understand the practices of fashion repairing among contemporary consumers in depth and to theoretically analyze its meanings and structure. Fashion-oriented consumers tend to respond more sensitively to social issues and trends than the general public and to quickly reflect them in their daily lives. Accordingly, this study examines how such consumers perceive fashion repairing, what motivations drive their participation, and how the practice is sustained. Particular attention was given to the process by which individuals accept repairing within their personal experiences and socio-cultural contexts, how the practice becomes concrete through consumer judgment and interaction, and how values and identities are formed in the process.
Grounded theory was employed as the methodological framework. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten fashion-oriented women in their 20s to 40s who had experience with repairing. Participants were recruited via campus postings, peer recommendations, and snowball sampling, with pre-screening used to verify their suitability. Data were collected until saturation, then open coding was conducted to conceptualize and categorize participants’ experiences and perceptions. Axial coding was used to structure the relationships among the central phenomenon, causal conditions, contextual conditions, intervening conditions, and consequences. In the selective coding stage, the core category was identified and a storyline explaining consumer behavior was developed.
Open coding yielded 11 major categories: ① fatigue with consumer culture, ② personalization of ready-made products, ③ practice of repairing, ④ support from fashion brands, ⑤ nostalgia and succession of the parental generation’s culture, ⑥ creative self-development, ⑦ emotional memory preservation, ⑧ orientation toward rational consumption, ⑨ ethical consumption orientation, ⑩ diffusion via digital media, and ⑪ demand for education and support.
In axial coding, “practice of fashion repairing” was established as the central phenomenon and analyzed within the structure of causal, contextual, intervening conditions and consequences. The causal conditions—fatigue with consumer culture, personalization of ready-made products, emotional memory preservation, brand support, and digital exposure—functioned as initial motivations for engaging in repair practices. Contextual conditions, such as cultural nostalgia and rational consumption (economic value judgment), provided a socio-cultural foundation for the practice. Intervening conditions, including demand for education and support and rational consumption (convenience and effort-cost considerations), acted as moderating factors influencing the sustainability and feasibility of the practice. Consequences included creative self-development, ethical consumption, and internalization of repairing culture through digital sharing and immersive engagement, all of which indicated the outcome of consumer value creation.
The selective coding process identified “fashion repairing practice for value creation” as the core category. Repairing emerged as a multilayered practice in which emotional recovery, identity expression, and ethical value realization intersect. Consumers positioned themselves as emotionally motivated actors based on fatigue from repetitive consumption and a desire for self-expression. Brand services and digital content acted as external stimuli that lowered the psychological entry barrier, whereas technical difficulty and time and effort constraints served as obstacles to sustainability. Accordingly, social demand for hands-on education and local infrastructure was also identified. Repairing expanded into a sensory practice that connects emotional and cultural memories of previous generations with the present, and was transitioning into a community-based cultural practice through digital sharing and repeated immersion. Ultimately, fashion repairing was found to be structured within an ecosystem organically connected to brands, institutions, and communities, operating as a sustainable consumption practice that integrates ethics and creativity.
Based on these findings, this study proposes the “C.R.A.F.T.” framework, which organizes the core value dimensions of repairing practices. This framework consists of Consciousness, Responsibility, Aestheticism, Functionality, and Transformation. It illustrates the trajectory through which repairing practices evolve into sustainable lifestyles via emotional shifts in perception, ethical actions and institutional engagement, creative self-expression, practical decision-making, and socio-cultural diffusion.
In conclusion, this study theoretically identifies fashion repairing as an integrated form of consumption practice that combines emotion, ethics, functionality, creativity, and cultural expansion. It validates that fashion repairing goes beyond simple mending to become a complex consumption act involving value judgment, identity formation, and communal cultural participation. These findings offer a theoretical foundation applicable to brand strategy, consumer education, policy design, and local practice, thereby contributing to the academic grounding for establishing a creative and sustainable consumer culture.
