필로스트라토스 『그림들』 = Philostratus Eikones

국문 초록 (Abstract)

필로스트라토스의 『그림들』은 수사학과 미술사학 양 분야에서 모두 독특한 가치를 지니는 작품이다. 한편으로는 고대 그리스·로마 회회사에서 공백으로 남아있는 기원후 2-3세기 회화에 대한 간접 증거를 제공하고, 다른 한편으로는 ‘기술(techne)’을 작품 전체의 주제로 채택함으로써 동시기 제2 소피스트 운동과 변화하는 교양 교육 시장의 영향을 반영한다. 그러나 기존 연구들은 주로 수사학의 영역에 관심을 집중하여 작품의 서술 전략과 수사학적 효과를 분석하는 데 치중해왔다. 이는 『그림들』 속 묘사를 원작 회화로부터 멀어진 수사학적 재구성으로 간주함으로써, 작품의 핵심인 그림 자체에 대한 논의를 주변화시키는 결과를 낳았다. 이에 본고는 『그림들』을 화가와 그림 자체에 대한 기술과, 그림에 대한 작가의 해설로 구분하여 두 층위를 각각 분석하고자 한다. 전자를 통해서는 필로스트라토스가 화가와 그림에 대해 지녔던 인식을 살피고, 후자를 통해서는 필로스트라토스의 해설자적 자기 인식과 해설의 특징을 살필 것이다. 이를 통해 본고는 필로스트라토스가 실질적이고 체험적인 그림 해설 교육을 제공하고자 했으며, 화가와 그림의 위상을 시인과 시에 준하여 격상시키려 했던 인물임을 주장한다. 나아가 『그림들』이 단순한 수사학 강연문이나 그림 해설 모음집이 아니라, 그림의 가치를 해석하고 평가하는 전문가를 양성하기 위한 일종의 지침서였음을 보일 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Philostratus’ Eikones is a work of distinctive significance in both classical studies and art history. On one hand, it provides indirect evidence for Greco-Roman painting in the second and third centuries CE, periods for which few material records survive. On the other hand, by adopting 'techne' as a central theme of the book, it reflects the influence of the Second Sophistic movement and the changing demands of liberal education(paideia) at the time. Previous scholarship, however, has primarily focused on rhetorical concerns, emphasizing narrative strategies and rhetorical effects. As a result, paintings themselves have been often overlooked , despite being the very objects of Eikones.,This paper seeks to distinguish two layers within the text: one that conveys information about the painters and paintings themselves, and another that presents the author's interpretations. By analyzing both, the paper examines Philostratus’ perception of painters and their works on one hand, and his self-conscious role as interpreter and the characteristics of his interpretations on the other. Ultimately, the paper argues that Philostratus sought to provide a practical, experiential education in interpreting paintings and aimed to elevate the status of painters and painting to a level comparable to that of poets and poetry. It further suggests that Eikones should be understood not as a mere rhetorical exercise or collection of descriptions of paintings, but as pedagogical handbook for training experts capable of interpreting and evaluating paintings.
