This study examines the typological structure of official documents (官文書) in the Han dynasty, focusing on the classification system presented in Wenxin Diaolong(『文心雕龍』), and explores its theoretical value and potential applicability in modern documentological research. Since the early 20th century, the classification of Han administrative documents has developed through various approaches, including content-based analysis, formal criteria, and classifications grounded in the physical features and institutional functions of excavated bamboo and wooden slips. Although these developments have been enriched by the progress of paleography and diplomatics, they remain fundamentally inductive and reliant on excavated materials. As a result, the systems are structurally vulnerable, especially when new document types are discovered.
In contrast, Wenxin Diaolong presents a coherent and hierarchical classification framework based on clear functional logic. Liu Xie proposes a four-tier typology: Zhaoce(詔策), Xiyi(檄移), Zhangbiao· Zouqi·Yidui (章表·奏啟·議對), and Shuji(書記). This structure reflects the flow of authority and administrative functions, from imperial orders to routine bureaucratic communication. When compared with modern classification systems, such as that proposed by Li Junming, Liu Xie’s structure shows greater consistency, completeness, and systematic rigor.
It is especially notable that Liu Xie does not treat document types such as An(案), Ke(科), Pin(品), Chuan(傳), and Ke(課) as independent categories. Instead, he integrates them into other categories based on functional similarity. For example, An is treated as a sub-record of Ji(籍) and Bu(簿); Ke and Pin are interpreted as detailed clauses within Lü (律) and Ling (令); Chuan and Fu(符) are seen as equivalent forms of travel documentation; and Ke and Ci(刺) are considered a pair related to performance evaluation and recordkeeping. This strategy represents not a simplification but a higher-order systematization grounded in the logic of administrative practice.
In addition, document types such as Guan(關), Jie(解), and Die(牒), which are listed in the Shuji chapter and grouped under the Baiguan Xunshi(百官詢事) category, have long been overlooked in both transmitted literature and modern classification systems. However, recent archaeological discoveries have confirmed their widespread practical use. Liu Xie classifies these documents as a single category based on their interconnected functions in administration, such as communication, inquiry and reply, factual recording, and procedural supplementation. This function-centered and organically linked system contrasts with the formalist and static typologies commonly used in contemporary paleographic research and provides valuable insights into the operating logic of Han dynasty bureaucratic documentation.
In conclusion, Wenxin Diaolong should be reappraised not only as a literary criticism treatise but also as a theoretical work offering a comprehensive perspective on the structure and operation of Han administrative documents. In today’s scholarly landscape, where the classification of excavated documents remains largely empirical and material-based, Wenxin Diaolong presents a logically integrated framework rooted in classical thought. It can serve as a meaningful reference point for future theoretical reconstruction. By analyzing Liu Xie’s system, this study aims to broaden the theoretical horizons of ancient documentology and reassess its relevance for interpreting Han dynasty official documents.
