As a society becomes more diverse, various social issues concerning minority groups are increasingly coming to the fore. Nevertheless, addressing the longstanding challenges faced by established minorities—such as persons with disabilities, women, and others—remains critically important. Despite numerous social initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of persons with disabilities, prejudice against them persists with little meaningful change. Among the various factors that diminish the quality of life for persons with disabilities, ‘prejudice’ against them is often cited as a fundamental cause, highlighting the need for proactive interventions.
This study aims to examine the effectiveness of news criticism instruction in reducing prejudice against persons with disabilities. Among the various types of media that shape public perceptions of disability, news media play a particularly influential role in forming attitudes toward persons with disabilities. Therefore, incorporating news analysis into educational curricula may be a valuable strategy for addressing and alleviating disability-related prejudice.
While educational interventions can be effective, their impact often varies depending on learners’ characteristics and prior experiences. Since learners are shaped by a variety of socializing agents and socio-cultural influences before entering formal education, a given intervention may affect students differently. This study, therefore, also examines how previous media viewing experiences moderate the impact of news criticism instruction. For high school students—who have likely accumulated substantial media exposure related to persons with disabilities over many years—these experiences may have significantly shaped their perceptions of disability. As such, it is important to assess how learners’ prior media experiences may influence the effectiveness of news criticism instruction. Doing so can deepen our understanding of how media-related environmental factors can enhance the impact of educational interventions designed to reduce prejudice against persons with disabilities.
In the proposed news criticism instruction, learners develop an understanding of the characteristics of news, critically assess the underlying values, perspectives, and intentions present in news content through structured analysis, and ultimately engage in reconstructing news messages. This process enables learners to recognize news as a ‘constructed’ reality and consider alternative representations. Unlike traditional lecture-based classes, the news criticism instruction proposed in this study aims to reduce disability prejudice by utilizing three key theoretical concepts together: ‘critical thinking’, ‘inoculation theory’, and ‘parasocial’ contact. Furthermore, the moderating role of prior media viewing experiences is grounded in a theoretical base, as prior research indicates that accumulated media exposure can exert complex influences on both educational interventions and prejudice formation.
To achieve these research objectives, the following research questions and hypotheses are established:
Research Question 1: How does the news criticism instruction proposed in this study affect high school students’ prejudice against persons with disabilities?
Main Hypothesis 1: The news criticism instruction proposed in this study will be more effective than a lecture-based class in reducing high school students' prejudice against persons with disabilities.
Sub-Hypothesis 1: The news criticism instruction proposed in the study will be more effective than a lecture-based class in reducing high school students' stereotypes about persons with disabilities.
Sub-Hypothesis 2: The news criticism instruction proposed in the study will be more effective than a lecture-based class in reducing high school students' avoidance and aversion towards persons with disabilities.
Sub-Hypothesis 3: The news criticism instruction proposed in the study will be more effective than a lecture-based class in reducing high school students' social distance from persons with disabilities.
Research Question 2: Does the effect of this instruction on high school students' prejudice against persons with disabilities vary depending on the extent of their media viewing experiences related to persons with disabilities?
Main Hypothesis 2: The effect of this instruction on high school students’ prejudice toward persons with disabilities will be moderated by the extent of their media exposure related to persons with disabilities.
Sub-Hypothesis 1: The effect of this instruction on high school students’ stereotypes about persons with disabilities will be moderated by the extent of their media viewing experiences related to persons with disabilities.
Sub-Hypothesis 2: The effect of this instruction on high school students’ avoidance and aversion toward persons with disabilities will be moderated by the extent of their media viewing experiences related to persons with disabilities.
Sub-Hypothesis 3: The effect of this instruction on high school students’ social distance from persons with disabilities will be moderated by the extent of their media viewing experiences related to persons with disabilities.
To test these hypotheses, this study recruited 105 high school students from six classes across one high school in Seoul and another in Gyeonggi-do. The experimental groups received the news criticism instruction developed for this study, while the control groups received a lecture-based class. Pre- and post-surveys were conducted with all participants.
Independent samples t-tests on pre- and post-scores and multiple regression analysis were performed to examine the effects of the news criticism instruction on disability prejudice. Hierarchical regression analysis was also conducted to investigate the moderating effect, including an interaction term between the instructional method and media viewing experiences related to persons with disabilities. The independent samples t-test on pre-test scores confirmed the homogeneity of pre-intervention prejudice levels between the groups. However, the independent samples t-test on post-test scores revealed no significant difference in post-intervention disability prejudice levels between the groups, and the multiple regression analysis also showed that the effects of the news criticism instruction were not statistically significant. Thus, Main Hypothesis 1 was rejected.
Conversely, the hierarchical regression analysis revealed a moderating effect of media viewing experiences on disability prejudice and its sub-factors of stereotypes and social distance. Therefore, Main Hypothesis 2 and its Sub-Hypotheses 1 and 3 were accepted, while Sub-Hypothesis 2 was rejected.
These findings carry the following implications: First, when implementing educational interventions to reduce disability prejudice, it is essential to prioritize understanding learners’ characteristics, particularly their prior media viewing experiences. This study emphasizes that the effectiveness of instruction can vary depending on individual differences, such as prior media exposure, and that demographic factors like gender may also influence levels of prejudice, especially in relation to media consumption. This suggests that a one-size-fits-all approach may produce inconsistent results or even unintended negative effects. Therefore, it is crucial to design individualized instruction that recognizes and addresses learners’ unique attributes.
Second, educational interventions aimed at alleviating prejudice should go beyond merely transferring cognitive knowledge and instead focus on fostering learners’ emotional attitudes and behavioral changes. This study suggests that specific teaching methods may vary in effectiveness depending on the type of prejudice, with direct interaction often having a stronger impact on emotional prejudice(avoidance and aversion). This highlights the importance of providing learners with opportunities to engage in real-world experiences beyond the classroom to develop a deeper understanding of minority groups, such as persons with disabilities. Consequently, educational settings should broaden opportunities for various forms of direct experiential learning to foster learners’ emotional and behavioral transformation through comprehensive educational approaches.
