When one medium is translated into another, a visual reinterpretation that reflects the nature of each is necessary, rather than a literal reproduction of the original object. This thesis proposes a methodology that can extend the reading experience and interaction made in the language of the print to the screen as the paper moves to the monitor.
The history of media that deliver information has gone through changes from a cave painting, which was constrained by space due to the limitations of materials, to papyrus that can be moved in hand, and from a single scroll to a codex in which several pages are overlapped. Following this, the newly emerged screen media quickly absorbed the existing media by digitizing all the information that had been created. As the main media environment changed from print to screen, the paratext of books was also digitized, but there were elements that could not be converted due to fundamental differences of the media.
Print media have been considered relatively static and one-sided because books are usually bound to read in one direction, maintaining a constant layout across several pages to contain a large amount of information. However, contrary to this perception, transformative forms of prints, such as foldbook and folded paper, unfold in mulltiple directions and provide readers with a complex perspective and spatial reading experience. This study aims to illuminate the folding structure that has various physical properties and creates interactions in print media.
To this end, I archived cases where the form of the folding structure and content are closely connected. I also examined the characteristics commonly used by five types of foldings: Cross Fold, Double Parallel Fold, Roll Fold, Accordion Fold, and Double Gate Fold. Then I explored the appropriate contents to be contained in the structure based on the analysis. By exploring the patterns of screen media that can share the reading experience that occurs in print media and converting the mobility of transformative forms of printed matter to a digital world, the thesis suggests the possibility of an sensory and experiential connection between the two media.
The study aims to establish an environment where the interactions inherent in printed matters can function as a language and be extended into anoter media. Through the examination of five foldings and website designs, it explores the direction of coexistence between print and screen in an environment where the two share and imitate each other’s language. This not only expands the unique interactions that print possesses into new media but also confirms the possibility that print and screen, as two distinct media, can build a complementary and distinvtive relationship while simultaneously exchanging the language of both media.
