This paper critically examines the appropriateness of moral blame, focusing on the concept of “standing to blame” as it arises in cases of hypocritical blame. The issue of hypocrites blaming others has long been problematized in everyday moral practice and various cultural proverbs, symbolically captured in expressions such as the Korean saying, “A dog with dung scolds a dog with chaff.” While many moral philosophers have taken it for granted that hypocrites lack the standing to blame, they have paid little attention to how the targets of such hypocritical blame ought to respond to that blame. Recent literature by Snedegar seeks to provide a theoretical account of how one should respond to blame from a hypocrite, arguing that such blame involves a second-personal demand that the target is entitled to dismiss. In contrast, I argue that blame needs not necessarily involve such a demand, thus hypocritical blame cannot be legitimately dismissed on these grounds. To legitimately dismiss hypocritical blame, the blame itself must contain a demand that is legitimately dismissible. Consequently, this paper contends that those who are blamed by hypocrites cannot legitimately dismiss such blame, and that the concept of “standing to blame” may misleading. In other words, if an act is blameworthy and a blame accurately points out the blameworthiness of that act, the blamed person ought to accept the blame, regardless of the blamer’s standing. This suggests that, when blame is understood as a tool for moral improvement, questioning the blamer’s standing may in fact hinder moral reflection and progress. This paper thus offers a new interpretive perspective on the moral practices and theories surrounding hypocritical blame, and aims to deepen our understanding of the nature and norms of blame.
