This thesis examines Korean art of the 1970s through the critical lens of the “literal”—a concept that encompasses non-symbolism, anti-interpretive resistance, and a return to the literal conditions of the medium. Moving beyond the dominant historical framing of the era in terms of the binary between Dansaekhwa and experimental art, this study identifies a shared tendency among artists to foreground the operative logic of their mediums while withholding symbolic meaning.
Rather than reducing this tendency to a symbolic proxy for national identity or a metaphor for political critique, the thesis argues that it marked a sustained effort to reconfigure the very category of art through literalist strategies. The literal, in this context, refers not to figural clarity or direct description, but to a conceptual stance that resists representation, decenters anthropocentric authorship, and foregrounds the constraints and affordances of the medium itself. This approach also challenges the humanist assumptions embedded in both modernist and nationalist aesthetics in 1970s Korea.
The thesis begins by analyzing Lee Ufan’s theory of post-anthropocentric art, which reimagines art-making as a non-productive, non-intentional “encounter” with things. Yet this orientation did not emerge from theory alone; it was grounded in the urban sensibility of the late 1960s, where artists responded to the rationalized, objectified landscape of the city by privileging objectivity, indeterminacy, and resistance to interpretation.
Against this background, painting became a site of both deep suspicion and radical possibility. As the most illusion-prone and symbolically burdened medium, it was questioned for its complicity with representation and authorship. Yet some artists did not abandon painting but sought to reconfigure it by working through the literal conditions of the pictorial plane. These experiments detached painting from narrative and metaphor, recasting it as a surface of contact and constraint—an encounter between medium, matter, and viewer.
The thesis then turns to performative actions involving the human body—treating the body not as an expressive subject but as a literal medium situated in time and space. These event-based practices emphasized physical action stripped of symbolic content, extending the literalist impulse into lived and durational forms.
Ultimately, the thesis contends that the central concern of 1970s Korean art was not simply to negate meaning, but to reassemble the ontology of art on the basis of its literal conditions. By tracing how thing, plane, and action intersect within this framework, the study proposes a new account of how Korean artists confronted the limits of representation and envisioned a practice of art beyond interpretation.
