This study aims to elucidate the status and interpretive issues surrounding 'anger' in East Asian Buddhist ethics through a comparative analysis of ten commentaries on the ninth major precept (hereafter, "anger precept") of the Brahma’s Net Sutra. The necessity of this research is summarized as follows. First, anger holds critical significance in mainstream Buddhism, closely tied to mental cultivation aimed at eliminating suffering, and in Mahāyāna Buddhism, it is inherently related to the practical realization of compassion. Particularly in Mahāyāna Buddhism, anger is fundamentally irreconcilable with compassion; as explicitly stated in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, even a single instance of anger by a bodhisattva is regarded as the greatest evil. Second, precepts (śīla) in Mahāyāna Buddhism have been reinterpreted or expanded as a "framework for practicing intrinsic ethics of compassion," serving as a reference point to comprehend the bodhisattva's mindset and ethical orientation. Third, the Brahma’s Net Sutra, considered to have been compiled in China, integrated the philosophical implications of Buddhism into ethical interpretations within the Chinese context and extended its recipients to lay practitioners, establishing a universal ethical structure. Fourth, the ten major and forty-eight minor precepts of the Brahma’s Net Sutra became solidified as practical ethical norms in East Asian Buddhism primarily through rigorous debates and elaborations in the commentarial tradition by eminent scholars such as Zhiyi and Wonhyo, despite scholarly consensus from the early 1900s regarding its apocryphal nature. While there have been studies focused on specific aspects, none have addressed the issue comprehensively from an integrated perspective. Thus, this research focuses on the nexus of "anger in Mahāyāna Buddhism – bodhisattva precepts – Brahma’s Net Sutra – commentaries."
Building upon these considerations, this study examines: first, how the anger precept of the Brahma’s Net Sutra has been reinterpreted regarding the bodhisattva's aspirations and practical feasibility; second, the contexts and intentions behind varying interpretations; and third, the position and role these interpretations occupy within East Asian Buddhist ethics.
In the main analysis, two interpretative premises shared by all commentators were identified. The first is normative ethics based on the "Mahāyāna bodhisattva," as Zhiyi explicitly states: "Bodhisattvas inherently embrace and protect sentient beings; thus, driving them away through anger constitutes a grave offense." The second involves practical reinterpretations of precepts, evident in the commentators' efforts to ease stringent original norms and generalize the criteria for moral accountability to secure practical applicability.
A key debate around defining a grave offense involves whether anger and related actions might be permissible under certain conditions. The Wonhyo commentary categorizes conditions comprehensively into four, with the foremost being "solely meritorious and non-offensive for bodhisattvas adept in discerning the capacities of sentient beings." In contrast, Fazang categorically denies any permissibility for anger, asserting that anger uniquely obstructs the path severely, a stance followed by Yuhan’s commentary. Uijeok, indirectly citing the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, leaves open the possibility of permissibility. Another debate concerns whether anger directed toward non-sentient entities constitutes a grave offense. Fazang, adhering strictly to the sutra text, prohibits anger toward both sentient and non-sentient beings; Yuhan later intensifies this stance. Thus, positions strictly forbidding anger in all circumstances reflect a fundamental emphasis on the inherent destructiveness of anger since early Buddhism.
Further analysis integrated and compared conditions for establishing a grave offense, confirming a psychological continuity from intention formation ('mental karma') through bodily and verbal actions. Wonhyo, Fazang, and Taehyeon posit physical or verbal manifestations as necessary conditions, with Fazang and Taehyeon regarding these as secondary, while Wonhyo deems their absence grounds for a minor offense despite fulfilling other criteria. Zhiyi, Uijeok, Seungjang, and Myeonggwang emphasize mental karma itself as the critical determinant. Notably, Uijeok, Seungjang, and Fazang include even the initial psychological formation of anger within the scope of moral accountability, highlighting ethical scrutiny from the very inception of afflictive emotions.
Conclusively, commentaries on the Brahma’s Net Sutra's anger precept, under the shared premise of embodying bodhisattva compassion and securing practical flexibility, demonstrate significant variability in defining anger's ethical gravity, contextual adaptability, and the differing importance assigned to bodily, verbal, and mental actions. The decisive role of mental karma in constituting grave offenses facilitates nuanced discussions of "intention" in Buddhist ethics alongside issues of "perception of the object" or "recognition by the other." Recent scholarly trends have favored consequentialist interpretations based on texts like Śāntideva's Bodhicaryāvatāra; however, commentaries on the Brahma’s Net Sutra underscore intention and the harmful nature of anger through diverse interpretations, suggesting caution against conclusively privileging consequentialism as the central ethical principle in East Asian Buddhist ethics. Additionally, the study highlights tensions inherent within the bodhisattva ideal uniquely foregrounded by the Brahma’s Net Sutra’s anger precept.
Whereas prior studies primarily explored individual commentators or specific traditions, this research systematically compares various commentaries, illuminating commonalities and differences. This comparative approach can significantly contribute to future Buddhist ethics studies, particularly in comprehensively understanding discourse developments through interactions among commentarial traditions.
