While solution-processed organic light emitting diodes (s-OLEDs) offer significant advantages in low-cost fabrication and large-area scalability, their performance optimization remains difficult due to complex material and process interactions. In particular, two challenges stand out: (1) the lack of clear understanding of how interfacial morphology affects charge carrier dynamics and overall device performance, and (2) the difficulty of optimizing process parameters such as ink concentration, which simultaneously influence film thickness, morphology, and electrical behavior in nontrivial ways.
To address the first issue, impedance spectroscopy (IS) was employed to investigate thermally induced interfacial intermixing in s-OLEDs. Although prior studies using depth profiling techniques have shown that intermixing becomes significant above the glass transition temperature (Tg), its electrical consequences remained unclear. Analysis of capacitance-frequency spectra from devices annealed at various temperatures was performed to examine the effect of intermixing on charge transport layer conductance and interfacial charge carrier accumulation. The results reveal that moderate annealing enhances charge transport and efficiency, whereas excessive intermixing caused by annealing above Tg introduces trap-assisted non-radiative recombination that degrades device performance.
To address the second issue, Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), a probabilistic machine learning technique, is applied to efficiently search for optimal ink concentrations for the charge transport layers. Without requiring detailed physical models, the GPR approach identifies multiple high-efficiency conditions within a few experimental iterations. Additional spectral analysis uncovers how ink concentration shifts the recombination zone, offering insight into the link between processing and device behavior. These two approaches are expected to advance both the understanding and optimization of s-OLED performance.
