The global energy transition necessitates bioenergy, with pyrolysis-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) emerging as a critical pathway for decarbonizing hard-to-electrify sectors like aviation. This thesis addresses two systemic challenges in scaling bioenergy systems: (1) the scale-dependent viability of feedstocks and (2) the temporal gap between biogenic CO2 emissions and sequestration, which static life cycle assessment (LCA) methods fail to capture.
First, this study analyzed scalable SAF production from forestry residue (FR) pyrolysis, starting with a base case design that was further optimized via Bayesian optimization. This base case confirmed that the SAF product meets performance standards, except in certain cases involving alternative hydrotreated bio-oil compound modeling. Ammonia cracking emerged as optimal, matching PEM electrolysis' emissions with 40% lower fuel costs and allowing 50% gray hydrogen use. Carbon capture systems (CCS) achieved net-negative emissions but raised costs by 30%, while partial CCS met regulations at $1.75/L. Scalability assessments found technical feasibility within biomass limits, with economic optimization at 10% aviation fuel replacement—exceeding mandates—and potential costs below \$1/L under scaled conditions.
Also, time-dependent global warming potential (TDGWP) in LCA was applied improving climate impact assessments of SAF by accounting for emission timing. Unlike static metrics, TDGWP reveals how delays between emissions and biogenic carbon sequestration affect net climate benefits. The research applied this approach to optimize SAF production aligned with 2050 net-zero targets, balancing carbon offset mechanisms, project scale, and regulatory demands. A dynamic optimization model identified operational strategies achieving a balance between $20 billion profit and -487.29~g~CO2e/MJ emissions, highlighting the need to address temporal emission dynamics in aviation decarbonization plans.
Overall, this thesis demonstrates the technical and economic pro-mise of pyrolysis-based SAF, the benefits of ammonia cracking integration, and the value of dynamic LCA for robust policy and technology assessment. The findings provide a methodological foundation for advancing climate-responsive bio-refinery deployment in the aviation sector. Additionally, future research should expand its scope by conducting in-depth analyses of various operational conditions, including uncertainties in feedstock prices and composition profiles, as well as spatial and temporal variability in forest regrowth, to further enhance the practical applicability of biorefinery systems.
