The massive black holes (MBHs; M_BH < 10^3 Msun) play a critical role in the evolution of the systems in which they are embedded.
For instance, the growth of the supermassive black holes (SMBHs; M_BH > 10^6 Msun) is known to be deeply correlated with the evolution of their host galaxies.
Although the existence of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBH; 10^3 Msun < M_BH < 10^5 Msun) is not yet completely confirmed, their evolutionary history is expected to be closely linked to the dynamical evolution of their host star clusters.
Given their complex interactions with a variety of astrophysical processes, numerical simulations are frequently employed to study the behavior and evolution of MBHs.
However, due to the extremely small physical scales of MBHs relative to their host structures, they are typically modeled using analytic subgrid prescriptions within astrophysical simulations.
These MBH models are still far from complete, hence their continuously improvement is essential to meeting the evolving goals and demands of simulation studies.
In this thesis, I aim to investigate key physical processes associated with MBHs that have been largely overlooked in the previous studies, by implementing novel MBH subgrid descriptions into two types of astrophysical simulation codes.
In Chapter 2, I examine the potential growth of the MBHs through tidal disruption accretion (TDA) in dense star clusters.
Recent observational surveys suggest that MBHs are ubiquitous in galactic centers and are even detected at redshift as high as z > 7.
However, explaining their rapid evolution in the early universe remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of their interactions with the surrounding environment.
While cosmological and galaxy-scale simulations have primarily focused on MBH growth via gas accretion, the contribution of stars as a mass source has often been overlooked.
When stars pass sufficiently close to an MBH, they can be tidally disrupted, and a fraction of the resulting stellar debris can be consumed by the black hole.
To address the contribution of TDA to MBH growth, we implement a TDA model into the high-resolution adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) code ENZO.
Specifically, I simulate the evolution of an MBH seed embedded within a dense nuclear star cluster (NSC) in an isolated Milky Way-like disk galaxy.
By varying key model parameters, we explore the implication of TDA on MBH evolution and compare it to the contribution of gas accretion.
Our results demonstrate that, while gas accretion still dominates the overall growth, TDA can significantly contribute to MBH growth during certain evolutionary epoch.
In Chapter 3, I study the evolution of star clusters hosting an IMBH, focusing on the formation and evolution of gravitational inspirals including IMBH.
Observational confirmation of IMBHs is a key step toward understanding the early growth of MBHs.
While current gravitational wave (GW) detectors such as the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (aLIGO) are limited in their sensitivity to such systems, future observatories like the Einstein Telescope (ET) and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) are expected to detect intermediate-mass ratio inspirals (IMRIs; inspiral of mass ratio q > 10^2).
I implemented a GW merger prescription of IMRI into the direct N-body simulation code Nbody6++GPU and conduct a suite of simulations of globular clusters containing an IMBH.
I then analyzed the statistical properties of resulting IMRIs---such as event rates and orbital properties---and estimate detection rates for upcoming GW observatories. Our finding confirm that IMRIs originating in such systems are promissing GW sources for next-generation detectors.
In summary, this thesis explores the astrophysical significance of MBHs by incorporating new analytic subgrid models into both hydrodynamic and direct {\it N}-body simulations.
This work demonstrates the important role of TDA in early MBH growth within dense star clusters and investigate the formation and detectability of IMRI events in globular clusters.
These results highlight the importance of stellar dynamics in shaping a comprehensive understanding of MBH evolution, serving as a complement to the traditionally hydrodynamical perspective.
